The PlayStation Pulse Explore that Sony has introduced seem to have two major features; a plug-and-play setup and high-quality and detailed audio. It is clear that the company wanted these earbuds to be distinctive from its other wireless headphones in more ways than just the avant-garde design of these buds.
A driver called a planar magnetic is employed by these buds to deliver audio, which is a specialty of Audeze that Sony recently acquired and have a reputation of producing sound with extreme clarity and detail.
Design and build
The size of the Pulse earbuds are on the large side and this is due to their overall girth. The earbuds are beefy and thick. Some people might have difficulty in using the buds due to their ear size and shape, especially people with small ears. They have a swooped two-tone design that looks downright excellent. You can use either earbud to access volume control, as both have a physical button rocker on top. There is a PlayStation Link button on the bottom of each bud and this can be used for toggling the connection between devices.
Charging case
The large charging case almost appears to be a mini PlayStation 5, as there is a white rounded plastic that swoops over a black interior. You can slide open the white case to see the charging points for the earbuds. There is also a Link button inside for starting Bluetooth connections.
The battery life is where the Pulse earbuds struggle, as they promise five hours of battery life on every charge and the case offers two full charges, which puts it at 15 hours. Other products from the company have a significantly better battery life.
Audio quality
The audio quality is the most important aspect to consider for equipment that has been designed for gaming. You will find that games sound fantastic through the earbuds, thanks to the new drivers that Sony is using. The sound quality offers some of the best detail that you will find out there.
The Pulse earbuds focus a great detail on detail reproduction and they offer a deep and nice bass. But, the buds do not do so well in the case of music. They do have lows and details, but they are majorly lacking in terms of vocal highs and mids. They are acceptable for music, but they are not a good option if you plan to use them primarily for this purpose. Sony has other better products for music.
Likewise, the quality of the microphone is also serviceable, but a bit disappointing. You will sound hollow and the voice sounds isolated. But, the AI-enhanced noise rejection is quite effective, as it manages to block out all other sounds that are not a voice. This is great for people who do not want to hear the sounds of other people drinking or chewing food while playing.
The Verdict
If you are looking for gaming earbuds, you cannot go wrong with the PlayStation Pulse Explore, but there are other options if you want devices for music and more.
