Other than its flagship devices and foldable phones, Samsung has produces a superb variety of budget devices, which include the Tab A Series. This year, it has introduced two budget tablet entries, which are the Tab A9 and Tab A9+. The latter is a direct successor to the Tab A8 introduced last year due to its quad speakers and large 11-inch screen.
Design and build
Despite the reasonable price tag, the feel and look of the Galaxy Tab A9+ is premium, as it boasts a shiny and smooth metal body. It is available in three colors, which are Navy, Graphite and Silver. Its weight is around 480g and is about 6.9mm thick, which makes it easy to hold and carry around. There is a decorative bar on the back on the top left-hand side, but it is not very flamboyant. Other than that, the back remains simple, with the camera bump and logo neatly tucked away.
There is a USB-C to USB-C charging cable included in the box, but no adapter. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also available. Face recognition is supported, but no fingerprint unlocking is provided.
Screen and speakers
Boasting an 11-inch LCD display, the Tab A9+ has a 1900 x 1200 resolution, which makes it a vivid and bold screen. The refresh rate on the tablet is around 90Hz, but it cannot be turned on permanently. The ‘adaptive’ mode will select the refresh rate when you are watching videos or scrolling. Thanks to the higher refresh rate, you can get smooth scrolling experience.
Quad speakers have been added to the tablet, which deliver reasonably loud sound and also offer considerable depth, which is quite surprising.
Specs and performance
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset powers the Tab A9+, which is combined with 4GB of RAM and storage of 64GB, or you can get the model that has 8GB of RAM and storage of 128GB. Performance is smooth, thanks to the octa-core processor and you can do day-to-day tasks easily. It boots up very quickly and you will have no issues in browsing the web, scrolling through social media, or watching videos.
There is a microSD card slot provided if you need additional storage and the tablet is able to run games without stuttering or lagging. But, you will notice hiccups if you do intense tasks like video editing.
Cameras
While these may be important in smartphones, they are not that vital where tablets are concerned. The Tab A9+ boasts an 8Mp rear camera and a 5Mp front camera. The former works best in daylight, but is nothing impressive. The front camera is sufficient for video calls, but it cannot provide the crisp details you usually get from phone cameras.
Battery life
In terms of battery, the Tab A9+ does not have anything special to offer. The 7040mAh cell is suitable for heavy usage in a day, but rivals are able to deliver a better performance, so this might be a bit disappointing.
The Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ has everything you could possibly require in a budget tablet, but if you want something for intense activities, it is best to get a premium one.
