Philips calls its best TV models OLED+, as they are OLED-based and the plus sign stands for a premium experience and top quality in design, sound as well as picture quality. The OLED+908 is undoubtedly a handsome unit, from its all-black screen surface to its super-thin edges. The felt-covered black panel is all black and extends down to the bench top. The foot is wider at the back to provide stability and Philips has also given the remote control a facelift.
The OLED+908 is the top model this year, as there will not be an OLED+938. This model can offer you a lot of sound, as it comes with a sound system by Bower & Wilkins, a rear subwoofer that has 30W power and two front-facing 20W speakers.
The sizes and details
You can find the OLED+908 in three sizes, which are 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch models. Their sound and picture characteristics are the same; they only differ in terms of size. It uses the same OLED panel used in the LG G3, as it has been manufactured by LG. It comes with its predecessor’s pixel technology, but the brightness has increased significantly because of the new MLA layer in front. The Micro Lens Array adds lenses in front of every light point, which releases more light to the eyes. Thanks to the new layer, the OLED+908 is one of the brightest TVs you will use.
The settings
You can make adjustments to the color temperature and brightness, or set it to auto-adjust as per the room. There is also a Filmmaker mode that can give you warmer colors and also enhances images and motion significantly. It is best to avoid the ‘Intense’ picture mode because it makes the color saturation unnatural and gives it a cold tone. There is also Home Cinema that offers frame smoothing, but still manages to retain the cinema feel. The OLED+908 comes with DTS support and it has DTS Play-Fi, which can make it easy to build a home cinema surround with Bluetooth speakers.
Connectivity
The OLED+908 comes with two HDMI 2.1 ports that support all important game-enhancing technologies. This includes G Sync and Freesync support. The other two HDMI cards only offer HMDI 2.0 support, which is disappointing because one of the 2.1 ports offers eARC support and you may want to use it for connecting external audio.
You can either use one of the HDMI ports for getting the TV picture, or stream it through smart TV apps without loss of quality. There is support for Wi-Fi 5 in the OLED+908 and it also has a fixed network port. Wi-Fi 6 would offer better connectivity, but it performs well enough for the most part and the bandwidth is also fine.
Moreover, the OLED+908 operates Android-based Google TV, which means you get to enjoy the complete Google Play range of smart apps, with some popular ones pre-installed.
The Verdict
It is quite clear that the OLED+908 from Philips is a quality TV, as it boasts the latest technology and it delivers an excellent movie and gaming experience.
