When it comes to budget screens, Sharp wants to top it and it has come up with this Roku-powered model that prioritizes ease of use and value. It is the latest one in the company’s long line of low-cost large screens. The TV is available in multiple sizes, which include 43-inch, 50-inch and 55-inch.
Design and build
Given the price of the Sharp FDJ2K, you would not expect a lot in terms of quality of materials, but the screen does not disappoint. Despite the large screen, it is relatively light, as the 55-inch model weighs just 11kg. It as plastic feet that are widely placed and is easy on the eyes. There are three HDMI inputs, which include a digital audio optical output, analogue AV inputs, one with eARC, two USB ports and Ethernet for supporting built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Since it is a 60Hz panel, you should not expect High Frame Rate support. It also comes with a CI card slot, if needed. There is a Roku-styled remote that boasts a purple navigation pad. There are also dedicated buttons for Spotify, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Netflix and Freeview Play. iPlayer and ITVX are also alongside the streaming buttons.
Specs and features
If you want to get a smart TV that gives you access to the best streaming services in the world, then you have made the right choice. This device boasts an ultra-stable smart platform, thanks to Roku and even though it does not have the same style flourishes as its rivals, it has an easy-to-navigate and no-nonsense nature.
Other than the streaming services, there is also a dedicated Roku channel with a blend of original movies and TV shows. The FJ2K works with Google and Apple voice assistants, along with Apple Home and Apple AirPlay. There is also a dedicated Game mode setting and it is extremely competitive.
Picture quality
The Picture Settings are in Low Picture mode by default and this conserves a lot of power, but it does affect picture quality. Even though peak HDR brightness is limited, the picture level is quite agreeable and this makes it suitable for viewing in a bright room. You will find presets like Sports, Standard, Vivid, Film, and viewing options include Darker, Dark and Normal. The screen is unable to provide a convincing black, but it is capable of creating a cinematic image.
Sound quality
The sound is quite impressive, thanks to 2x10W, but it does sound a bit hollow when you crank up the volume. Other than the Auto sound mode, you will find other options like Theatre, Speech and Standard. A Dialogue Enhancer is also included, if you are looking for more vocal clarity.
The Verdict
In terms of design, the Sharp Roku FJ2K may not be cutting-edge, but it is definitely capable of delivering good value. As long as you do not want to have access to the latest picture processing, then you can get this reasonably priced TV that offers you decent picture and sound quality.
