The Honor Magic V2 had first been launched in summer of 2023 in China and had impressed as the slimmest book-style foldable device. While the international launch took some time, it still manages to perform brilliantly, as no other flagship foldable is offering a newer chip as yet. The price may seem a bit high, given its ageing hardware, but the promising specs and the lightweight and slick design could prove to be worthwhile.
Design and build
The Magic V2 comes with a rear panel that is mostly flat and has comfortable curved edges. It is available in Black, which features a vegan leather rear panel and in Purple that comes with a glass panel. The first thing you will notice about the phone is just how slim it is. When closed, it measures just 9.9mm, which is quite a feat for a foldable. It weighs 231g, which means it is not bulky at all.
When you fold the phone, the lock button and volume rocker appear on the right-hand side of the phone. Otherwise, they are on different sides of the internal display. There is a fingerprint reader built into the lock button and it works quite well. It comes with an aramid fiber case that has a kickstand.
Screen and speakers
The Magic V2’s displays are impressive to say the least. The 7.92-inch internal screen and the 6.43-inch cover screen are both OLED and come with a refresh rate of 240Hz. LTPO displays means that you can adjust the refresh rate to 1Hz to save battery life. Both internal and external displays are quite bright and you will not have any issues in viewing them anywhere.
The dimensions of the outer display match those of non-foldable smartphones, which means the Magic V2 can also be mistaken for a standard phone. As for the inside screen, it is one of the largest panels you will come across on any foldable device, but the crease is one of the shallowest. While you can feel it, it is certainly not as visible as in the case of Google and Samsung devices.
Both panels come with HDR10 and Dolby Vision support and produce accurate and vivid colors. Gaming on the internal screen is also exciting. When folded, the speakers are positioned on the top and bottom of the device and when unfolded, they go on the left and right. They sound good and there is no distortion, but they are not the loudest ones in the market.
Specs and performance
The Magic V2 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which was a flagship chip at the time of launch, but is now slightly outdated. But, in terms of foldables, it is still up to the mark because the Magic V2 manages to outperform its competition in most ways. The chip remains powerful and is responsive and fast. It does not heat up a lot, which is also impressive, given how slim the phone is because it means there is not much space for cooling.
Multitasking is also very smooth on the Magic V2 because it boasts about 12GB of RAM. You can easily run multiple apps on the internal display, both as floating windows, or in split-screen mode. As for storage, you have the option of choosing between 512GB and 1TB. No support for expandable storage is provided.
The Verdict
As compared to other foldable phones in the market, the Honor Magic V2 also offers brilliant battery life. The fact that it is normal-sized and lightweight and slim adds to its appeal and the design is also excellent. While it is not perfect, it is definitely a good option if you want a foldable device.
