The One-Plus R series was launched as a more affordable and stripped back version of the flagship line, which had been created for Asian markets. But, with the OnePlus 12R, the brand has launched its R series globally. The package is similar to the offerings of the OnePlus 11 launched last year, along with some upgrades and downgrades.
Design and build
As mentioned above, the OnePlus 12R is similar to the OnePlus 11 in terms of both feel and looks. The large device is deceptively slender due to the longer curved edges on the front and back. It is about 8.8mm thick and weighs 207g, both higher than last year’s model. Nonetheless, it remains sleek and nice and the distinctive camera module design of the OnePlus 11 has also returned.
The display boasts Gorilla Glass Victus, which makes it more durable. OnePlus’ signature alert slider can be found on the left edge of the phone and it can be used to switch between loud, vibrate and silent modes. An IR blaster has also been added on the top edge, which is a notable addition and it is genuinely useful.
Screen and speakers
The display of the OnePlus 12R is undoubtedly impressive, as it measures 6.78-inch and uses the LTPO 4.0 panel technology that can adjust the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz, as per the requirement. The resolution has been reduced a little, but it is higher than 1080p. It is around 2780 x 1264, which is somewhere between QHD+ and FHD+, which is a good compromise.
It gives a sharp and nice image and excellent color accuracy. Brightness is also quite good and you will have no complaints in this regard. There are dual stereo speakers on the bottom edge of the phone and in the earpiece and they are clear and loud, even at top volume.
Specs and performance
The OnePlus 12R comprises of the flagship chip of last year, which is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Its performance is similar to the OnePlus 11, particularly with the 16GB of RAM provided. The phone is incredibly quick and it can run even the most demanding 3D games in the market smoothly. Even though it is not a gaming device, it has received some game-focused attention, so it manages to give a strong sustained performance. The phone is well-equipped and has support for Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 7.
Cameras
The main 50Mp Sony IMX890 sensor in the OnePlus 12R is the same as OnePlus 11, which is capable of capturing good pictures in decent lighting. Even in lesser lighting conditions, it can take adequate shots. But, it does lack the Hasselblad enhancements of the OnePlus 11, which means there are no custom shooting modes, the pleasing camera UI and the punchy color science. There is no telephoto camera available, but there is an 8Mp ultra-wide camera. A 2Mp macro camera is also available and a 16Mp front camera for taking selfies.
The Verdict
With an impressive battery life, the OnePlus 12R is undoubtedly a good bargain, considering its affordable price tag and that it offers the features of last year’s OnePlus 11.
