The Pulse series of headphones from Sony has grown over the years, with the new Pulse Elite not only promising to raise the bar in terms of quality and features, but also in terms of price. While they are definitely not the most expensive headphones out there, they are still a bit more expensive than the standard Pulse 3D headphones.
Design and build
In the era of the PlayStation 5, Sony has opted to stick with an avante-garde design and the same applies to the Pulse Elite headphones. They have a rather unusual look and they come with a physical telescoping microphone. Either side of the ear cups has swooping lines where you will find the only manual controls the headphones have. The right hand side has the microphone and a single button for mute. There is also a light turns red when you hit mute, which comes in handy.
The left side, on the other hand, comes with inputs for a charging port, a headphone cable, a volume rocker and the power/PlayStation Link button. As Sony intended the headphones to be used with the PS5, they have a simple design. You can get a ton of customization options when you connect them, such as a customizable EQ and sound mix.
The use
The PlayStation Link technology has been used in the Pulse Elite, which enables you to connect them wirelessly to a PlayStation 5 and a PlayStation Portal. They have very good range as well. In addition, they also come with a type of wireless multipoint, which allows them to connect with two devices simultaneously and play audio, as long as one of them is a PlayStation. This allows you to play games and also be able to hear your phone ring, or have entire conversations without disconnecting from your game audio.
These headphones do not come with active noise cancellation, but the passive noise isolation is really good. They are also extremely comfortable because Sony has been smart enough to use such a material for the ear cups that does not get too hot, even when you use them for several hours and is plush and soft.
Sound quality
The Pulse Elite headphones have benefitted from Sony’s recent Audeze acquisition, as they have incorporated the excellent planar magnetic drivers of the brand. They sound downright superb for a number of use cases. They have a more tightly controlled bass, which sounds very natural and does not rattle your teeth. This makes them quite perfect for gaming. You can enjoy clear audio because the mids and the highs blend well with the bass.
The headphones have also been mixed with spatial audio from Sony and they sound wonderful in every type of game. As a matter of fact, they also sound great when you use them to listen to music. Typically, gaming headphones do not really offer a good music-listening experience, so this is definitely a bonus.
The Verdict
True to their name, the PlayStation Pulse Elite headphones deliver top-tier performance across several metrics. You can enjoy spectacular audio quality and they have an excellent battery life, not to mention how comfortable they are.
