A new multisports watch, the Garmin Forerunner 165 is now the cheapest way for anyone who wants to own a Forerunner with an AMOLED display. The 165 sits between Garmin’s entry-level AMOLED-free Forerunner 55 and the Forerunner 255.
Design and Build
The design of the Forerunner 165 is very much in line with the other Forerunners in the market that have recently gotten the color screen treatment from Garmin. The watch is undoubtedly sporty-looking with its polymer case found in four different colors if you explore the music edition, while the non-music edition has opted for two colors.
Both versions are available in a case size of 43mm, with a polymer bezel and have the five button array that you will typically find on other Garmin Forerunners. There is also a workout button in the corner. There is a 20mm silicone strap that comes with the case and it stretches easily. A range of six colors is available, depending on which model you choose.
The color screen measures about 1.2-inch and the touchscreen has a resolution of 390 x 390. It is colorful, sharp and very responsive and you can also choose to have an always-on display if you want. To put it simply, the Forerunner 165 is a fairly light and dainty watch, which is great for all-day wear and has an excellent display to match.
Health and Fitness Tracking
The priority with the Forerunner 165 is tracking your runs, similar to other watches in the same series. But, it also offers dedicated tracking modes for swimming, cycling and even for open water swimming.
You can find additional profiles for indoor activities, such as yoga, stair stepping and indoor cycling and it has been build for outdoor activities, such as hiking.
Nonetheless, the primary reason you will want to pick the watch up is for running and it delivers an excellent performance on this front. You can find useful features like as PacePro pacing strategies and access to Garmin Coach as well. The Forerunner 165 also comes with a built-in GPS and it has a solid performance, even if it is not the most accurate. The 165 also comes with the Elevate Gen 4 optical sensor from Garmin for tracking blood oxygen levels and heart rate.
The sensor performs quite well during exercise, even when the intensity is on the high side. Even outside of running, the Forerunner 165 proves to be a familiar and competent performer. While the watch does not come with full mapping support, it does manage to provide breadcrumb navigation and this makes it a useful device to have if you get lost.
Smartwatch Features
The inclusion of the AMOLED screen helps the Forerunner 165 perform quite well as a smartwatch. It makes it fun to scroll through menu screens, use music features and read longer notifications. There is 4GB of storage available for music and Wi-Fi connectivity allows you to store audio from different streaming services like Amazon Music, Deezer and Spotify.
The Verdict
The Garmin Forerunner 165 proves to be a strong addition to the company’s collection of multisport watches and offers an AMOLED screen at a reduced price.
