Keychron V1 Max is known for making quality keyboards like its competition, but at a fraction of the price they charge. It has done it again with the kaunch of the V1 Max, which is a compact and highly customizable mechanical keyboard and is capable of doing it all.
Design
You will find that the chassis of the Keychron V1 Max is only available in one color i.e. Carbon Black. The matte plastic shell that has been used for making it is capable of resisting fingerprints. Most of the keycaps are grey, the Return/Enter and ESC keys are orange and the edge keys are black. The contrast is nice and certainly keeps things interesting. You can swap out the keys and the switches if you do not like the color combination.
The customizability is the main selling point of the Keychron V1 Max. You can use your own keycaps and switches. Since it is a wireless keyboard, you will find plenty of switches and ports on the back that allow you to switch between different platforms and connectivity modes. The left side has a USB-C port for charging and wired use and there are also two cubbies for the USB-A and USB-C 2.4GHz receivers.
There are simple rubber feet under the keyboard and it has two-stage legs at the back that allow you to adjust the angle.
Performance
Typing on the Keychron V1 Max is an excellent experience. Once you start typing, you are unlikely to experience any issues because the keys are tactile and do not lead to any fatigue. You do not need to use any real force for typing because the keys actuate before they hit bottom. Since it comes dampened with foam and pre-lubed, the keyboard is very quiet. Slow strokes are almost silent and even when you speed up, you will not see it get very loud.
But, the spacebar does have issues because if often registers twice. It is better to swap the switch to address the issue. The keyboard comes with a 4,000mAh battery that can take weeks to drain, especially with medium brightness. Keychron promises 100 hours with lighting and that seems to be the case here. You can get triple that if you turn off the backlight. The charging time of five hours sounds very long, but you can leave it overnight.
Software and lighting
The Keychron V1 Max features full RGB lighting and the south-facing LEDs can deliver a subtle performance. The double-shot OSA PBT keycaps do not allow light to pass through, but are great for longevity. When placed at a desk, the light will peek out from the small gaps between the deck and keycaps. You can give it a touch of professionalism when you choose a solid color. You can use the web app for configuration purposes, but it is not very intuitive.
The Verdict
Since it is available at a fraction of the price of some of the top mechanical keyboards in the market and with the option of fixing and tweaking, the Keychron V1 Max is undoubtedly a keeper.
