If you were wondering about what Princess Peach would do in a spinoff of her own, then you can find the answer in Princess Peach: Showtime! It shows that the character can do pretty much anything and everything. One minute she is saving the world from an alien invasion and the next she is performing elegant skating routines. Thanks to this variety and the original stage play aesthetic are downright delightful and give the game a boost, despite its simple gameplay. The solo outing of Princess Peach in almost two decades certainly proves to be nice.
The location
Sparke Theater is where the entire game of Showtime! Takes place, which is the go-to place for theatergoers and thespians in the Mushroom Kingdom. Other than the Toads that accompany Princess Peach, everything else that was familiar has been replaced. Instead of the Koopas, Goombas and Shy Guys that were seen in the world of Mario, Showtime! comes with new antagonist Grape, along with her Sour Bunch.
Even though they may come off as a bit generic, it is good to see an adventure focused on Peach that is completely removed from the trappings of the main series. Peach has been given ownership of something fully original and this is undoubtedly refreshing.
The positives
The stage play feel and look that you will come across in Showtime! is undoubtedly impressive. Every level emphasizes the idea that the adventure is taking place within a theater and it gives memorable and charming results. Peach is always in the spotlight and this looks really cool when it happens at night. The whole stage often rotates to give the illusion that you are entering a completely new room without any change in the camera angle. Thanks to these delightful touches, the game is a joy to play.
The stages
A younger audience is clearly Nintendo’s target with Showtime! Peach is capable of taking about five hits before its game over and the platforming, puzzles and combat are quite simple. Likewise, the basic control relies on only two buttons. The campaign roughly takes about 8 hours and there are different stages of Peach’s transformations. Nintendo has chosen the right character for introducing a new concept and this character proves to be a great choice for playing the various roles.
The costume design is truly great for every single of the 10 transformations. It is fun to see Peach do new things that she did not do in a Mario game. Every transformation comes with its own story, which is explained across new abilities, three acts and unique set design and music. Even though each level actually takes place in the theater, the locations all appear to be different from each other. Thus Showtime! never feels repetitive at any point. Different game genres have been explored in the transformations, which means there is something to interest everyone.
The Verdict
Princess Peach: Showtime! manages to offer a lot of fun, while staying in the Sparkle Theater and it has explored some of the most popular genres of gaming rather delightfully.
