An annual release schedule comes with a lot of pressure and can lead to mistakes, something that has happened to a series like WWE 2K. But, WWE 2K24 seems to have adopted the series’ new vision and is much better than the last two versions that were introduced. It has some small yet smart additions and comes with well-tested modes and systems.
The Best Looking Wrestling Game
The 2K series continues to hold the title of the Best Looking Wrestling Game and this holds true for WWE 2K24 as well. The game has fewer number of wrestlers with outdated gimmicks and other than a few exceptions, almost all top stars manage to look very much like their real-life versions. This includes their tattoos, gear and even their signature hairstyles and dos. In addition, the announcers also have their special flourishes.
Similarly, the referees you see on weekly television have also been copied, which is certainly a welcome change from the generic ones used before. Even though they are not the center of attention, they do play an important role, so it is good to see this.
The addition
When you dig into the mechanics of the game, you will have to go through 2K24 very carefully to find out how different it is from its predecessor. The biggest addition made to the game is the Super Finisher, which allows you to spend three finisher stocks in order to perform a bigger version of your finisher. It does take some work for you to build up that many stocks, but it is worth it.
You will also come across a new trading blows mini-game that appears unprompted and infrequently, usually in the beginning of a match. Players have to take turns trying to fill a gauge at increasing speed and if they fail to do it quickly or run out of stamina, they will be left vulnerable to a big attack.
Other tweaks in the game are on the subtle side. You will find cute new weapon options, such as microphones and you can also throw smaller objects. This is a fun and great way to do some damage from a distance.
The matches
In terms of types of matches, there are some that have returned from older games and they are definitely worth checking out. The most potential for chaos comes with the special guest referee match, as one player can control the referee. This enables them to skew things the way they see fit, or they can also play fair. Referees have full agency over when they acknowledge submissions, count pins, and disqualify cheating. But, if a ref slacks off too much, a new one will come in to replace them.
The casket and ambulance matches come with similar goes i.e. shoving the opponent into a box they do not want to go in. The ambulance match is better because you have more ways of interacting with the ambulance. There are also three flavors of gauntlet matches and they are all great additions.
The Verdict
WWE 2K24 shows that Visual Concept and 2K have finally succeeded in making this package better than the previous one.
