The Dell XPS 16 is the largest laptop in Dell’s 2024 lineup and as per its specifications, it is also the most capable. It boasts a stellar design and a hefty price tag, as it aims to compete with Apple’s 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Pro.
Design
The first thing you will notice about the Dell XPS 16 is that it is heavy. Weighing almost 4.8lbs, it is difficult to hold it in one hand. This is not surprising for a 16-inch laptop and it definitely does not feel cheap. Both side of the keyboard have large speakers and there is a lot of room for your palm on both sides of the invisible and spacious trackpad.
The overall look of the laptop is clean. The main keyboard has very soft landings and there is very little travel between the keys. Some keys are quite wide due to the size and this can lead to some errors during typing. The display measures 16.3 inches and has slim bezels. The top bezel is a bit larger for accommodating the new 1080p camera. In terms of connectivity, the Dell XPS 16 comes with a 3.5mm jack, three USB-C (Thunderbolt 4 ports) and a microSD card slot. A dongle is also provided for expanding connectivity options to full HDMI and USB-A.
Screen and Sound
The 16.3-inch screen is a 4K OLED, which is quite striking. The colors are bold and rich and Dolby Vision HDR is supported. It offers a refresh rate of 48Hz to 90Hz and it is accurate and detailed. You will have no complaints about brightness, whether you are gaming, or doing everyday tasks. The speakers prove to be immensely powerful.
You can enjoy a cinematic experience when you combine the loud speakers and with large display. The stereo speakers have been Dolby Atmos-enabled, which means you can get immersive audio. It gives you an atmospheric and dynamic soundscape, something that is rare on a laptop.
Performance
The specs of the Dell XPS 16 are undoubtedly impressive. It boasts the latest generation Intel Ultra 7 155H processor and the powerful chipset delivers smooth performance. It is more than fast enough for workloads and can also be used easily for more demanding tasks like creative production. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU boasts fantastic gaming chops.
While the laptop has not been designed to optimize gaming performance, it still manages to do a good job. It also has excellent SSD performance and applications and large files load instantly. You also have flexible storage options that go from 512GB to 4TB.
Battery
The Dell XPS 16 has a large battery, thanks to the extra space in the chassis. The laptop can last for more than 10 hours, which is certainly impressive. A 130W charger is also included.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a premium laptop that does it all, you cannot go wrong with the Dell XPS 16. It has a terrific and large screen, a pro design, a powerful CPU and a fantastic gaming GPU.
