The mobile gaming controller grip landscape has seen competition go up, but GameSir has still managed to have an impact. It has come up with the X4 Aileron to go up against the Razer Kishi Ultra. They are essentially a set of Nintendo Switch Joycon controllers that you can use with your phone and some other devices, as long as you are a bit creative.
When you purchase the GameSir X4 Aileron, you will discover that it is essentially a two-package deal. You receive two halves of a controller and they have extendable clamps to attach to the two sides of your phone. In this way, it is capable of accommodating large-format phones, but using taller phones may be a tad difficult. The grips are black, but they have some green coloring and GameSir’s white branding.
The right controller has the Xbox-colored face buttons that give it some flair. You will find the grip generous, as the Aileron body is rounded rather aggressively on both sides. The thickness also ensures that you get a solid grip. Once you power it on, each joystick is illuminated with bright RGB LED rings. They give notifications for battery life and pairing. You can also use smart button combinations to add a touch of personality.
The buttons are clicky and low-profile. There is not a lot of travel and you will also find hot-swappable magnetic microswitch. You can also remove the joysticks and d-pad and use others given in the box. Under the grip, you will find a programmable button on both sides. They can copy the buttons on the front, so you do not have to take your thumb off the joysticks during gaming.
To use the GameSir X4 Aileron controller solution, you will have to go over the instructions first. They turn on automatically when you fit the grips to a device, but only when you use them with a phone. The setup is a bit more complicated when you use them with a PC, or a different device. You can use the stock configuration to play low-end games, as the microswitch buttons are very responses.
The GameSir app also comes in handy when you want to map the buttons. The actual travel distance is about 0.6mm, which essentially makes it instantaneous. The triggers have the right resistance, squeeze and travel to give you the authentic touch. If you prefer speed over control, you have the option of switching to the hairline actuation mode. The rotation of the thumbsticks is very smooth.
This controller solution is fully wireless. No need to plugged anything. Each controller is connected via an internal 2.4GHz connection. The use of Bluetooth does not lead to any input lag or latency issues. There is a USB-C port for charging available on the bottom of the right pad. The two pads have to put back together for charging.
The Verdict
If you are seeking a mobile game controller that you can carry around easily and makes no compromises on grip, the GameSir X4 Aileron is a smart choice.
