Sonos has finally stepped away from its comfort zone and developed the Sonos Ace headphones, after receiving a lot of requests for it. Its competitors have already traversed these waters, so now it is the brand’s turn to bring out something different.
Design
If you are in search of one of the comfiest pair of over-ear headphones that exist today, you cannot go wrong with the Sonos Ace. You will have no trouble in wearing them for hours, given how easily you can slip them on the head and the way they conform. The vegan leather earpads give a padded feel that is hard to match. The earcups also have a slimmer profile, which means they do not have a bulky look. They remain secure over your head, without feeling too tight. There is a step-less slider that can be used to make adjustments to the fit.
Sonos has used contrasting colors within the earcup to help distinguish between right and left. If you want to replace the earpads, all you have to do is detach them. It is also possible to replace the battery inside. There is also a Content Key button that you can use for managing volume, playback and calls. There are also buttons for controlling power, voice assistance and ANC. But, the headphones lack a 3.5mm jack. A carry case is also provided, which also has a smaller case for keeping the cables.
Features
The ANC performance on the Sonos Ace is great. The Aware Mode is also very impressive and you can easily have a conversation. The headphones come with support for Bluetooth 5.4 and there are no connection issues for you to worry about. You can also use Bluetooth multipoint if you wish to connect two devices simultaneously. Snapdragon Sound is also available, but only Android users can take advantage of it.
There is a USB-C cable available with the headphones that you can use for playing content with a wired connection. Sonos has also revised its app and you need to use it with the headphones. It can be used for sound customization, making firmware updates, noise control settings, wearing sensor and activating the Head Tracking and Audio Swap feature. However, you cannot access music via the app, which is quite disappointing.
In terms of use, the app is very straightforward, but it does not offer the same level of customization as its competitors. The battery lasts for about 30 hours when you use the headphones with ANC. Call quality is acceptable for the price and the headphones perform well where there is not a lot of voice.
TV Audio Swap
While using headphones with the TV is not a new concept, the Sonos Ace offer an experience that is unmatched due to its TV Audio Swap feature. They can create a direct Wi-Fi connection with the Sonos Arc soundbar. It delivers a seamless experience and the sound is undoubtedly impressive. The sound quality is also smooth and the bass is weighty.
The Verdict
Sonos has come up with comfortable and well-designed headphones in its first attempt, even if they do have a higher price tag than they should.
