With intense competition in the market, Samsung has come up with the Samsung QN90D to improve the viewing experience. It has done so by giving brightness a boost and without making any sacrifices in terms of color accuracy. It has also taken advantage of several new technologies to refine the on-screen picture quality.
Design and Build
The QN90D comes with a stand, in case you choose not to mount it up on a wall. Setting it up is quick and easy, as it has just a couple of screws. You just need to be careful about orienting the cables the right way to avoid any issues. One of the areas where Samsung is outstanding is connectivity. Therefore, you will find four HDMI 2.1 ports. One of these is best for eARC and one for gaming. All four of the ports support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency (ALLM) and 4K at 144Hz.
At the back, you will also find a cable input, a LAN port, two USB-A connections and an optical audio output port. The QN90D also offers support for Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.2. In terms of looks, the TV does not disappoint. Its slim bezels are barely noticeable when you watch anything and it has a very sturdy stand. It lifts up the TV enough that you can fit a slim soundbar under it.
The Remote
Samsung usually keeps its remotes simple and it has not changed with the QN90D. It only boasts a handful of buttons. However, the simplicity means that some of the buttons serve dual purpose. It might take you a little bit of time to get used to it. Moreover, there is no need to worry about the battery because the remote runs on solar power.
Software and UI
Samsung has finally made some changes to its custom TV operating system called Tizen. The good news is that it no longer auto-plays content, which is a huge relief. In terms of picture customization, you can adjust sharpness, brightness and contrast and there are also some picture profiles. However, there is no extensive picture customization that other manufacturers offer. There is no support for Dolby Vision HDR, which is disappointing.
However, Samsung is working on making its TVs the center of Samsung-connected homes and it has introduced Daily+ for this purpose. This brings together various apps, such as Communication, SmartThings, Health and Workspace. A new Workout Tracker has also been introduced and there is a telehealth service for pets named Dr. Tail.
There are two other technologies that make a marked difference. These are the AI Customization Mode and the Real Depth Enhancer Pro. The latter is aimed at upscaling and optimizing content for making it look better and the former improves the visibility of the foreground elements by sharpening their appearance. This is an excellent addition, as it has a direct impact on picture quality. The mini LED display is great and the anti-reflection coating prevents any glare.
The Verdict
The improved interface and the host of new features that Samsung has incorporated make the QN90D a nice television.
