The Alienware M16 R2 (2024) belongs to a group of new Windows gaming laptops that use some new Intel processors. It has some restrained yet gorgeous looks and some powerful specifications. It is certainly on the expensive side, depending on what specs you decide at the end of the day.
Design
Alienware has chosen to ditch its thermal shelving on the back and has opted for sleek lines and curves with the M16 to give the laptop more style. The aluminum chassis feels great and the curved edges make it a stylish device that justifies the price tag. It weighs about 2.61kg, which is lighter than other models, even if it is still heavy. It means that the device is a bit more portable, but lugging it around is not that easy.
Despite its smaller volume, lower weight and redesign, the M16 still has an excellent selection of inputs. It boasts a pair of Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, an HDMI out and a cable for the power brick. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 2.5-gig Ethernet on the left. As for the right, you will come across two USB-A ports. The laptop also supports both Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 7. This connectivity is great for networking and for adding some more peripherals. While the display may be 16-inch, the M16 has chosen a compact frame of about 23.5mm thick.
Display and Sound
Display is one area where the Alienware M16 does struggle. OLED panels have now become quite common, so the 16-inch IPS panel does feel like a downgrade. However, you will not have any complaints when it comes to color, but the brightness and contrast ratio do leave more to be desired. The display works quite well for content creation and gaming, thanks to the 2560 x 1600 resolution. The 240Hz refresh rate also feels good and responsive and it makes the screen feel almost silky.
The laptop also comes with dual side-firing speakers that have some decent volume and solid bass. As compared to speakers of other laptops, the ones here do not feel weak or tinny. Dolby Atmos has also been included, which brings immersion, especially in games.
Performance
The M16 packs quite a punch when you check out its specifications. It comes with an RTX 4070 laptop GPU as well as 8GB of VRAM. The laptop is also powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H that boasts 16 cores and 22 threads. It has been paired with 32GB of DDR5 RAM. Considering these specifications, it is not surprising to discover that the laptop is capable of handling pretty much anything you throw at it.
But, one thing you have to remember is that the laptop does generate a lot of heat. It also gets very noisy and the fan is also very loud. Therefore, it is best to keep it on a desk rather than your lap.
The Verdict
Whether it is for day-to-day working, or for gaming, the Alienware M16 R2 offers beefy performance. The laptop offers plenty of power and has some great specifications to get the job done.
