Aimed at the high-end gaming headset market, it is not surprising that Audeze Maxwell comes with a hefty price tag. However, it does have a unique proposition, as it intersects with both the gaming headset and audiophile sector.
Design and Features
As compared to its competition, the Audeze Maxwell boasts a non-descript design, as it is available in all-black. You will not see any additional flair, except for a blue Audeze logo on the bottom edge of the headband. It comes with a suspension-style headband and big earcups. It is made of a blend of high-quality plastics and metal, while its rivals mostly stick to plastic.
The plastic parts of the headset feel both sturdy and smooth. The headset is also quite flexible, as it boasts aluminum yokes and the headband is made from spring steel. The construction of the Maxwell certainly justifies its price tag. As they weigh 490g, they are on the heavy side and it takes some time to get used to the headset. But, the earcups have plush padding, which offers plenty of noise isolation.
In addition, you do not have to worry about clamping force, thanks to the suspension-style headband. You can wear the Maxwell comfortably for extended periods of time. The controls are located at the bottom of the left earcup. This includes volume adjustment, noise suppression level, pairing options and the mix between game audio and mic sidetone. Every control is tactile and a small voice also tells you what button you have pressed.
Software
The Audeze HQ app comes with a decent level of functionality. You will find plenty of EQ preset options. Plus, updating the headset’s firmware and its receiver is also a breeze. You can also make adjustments to the level of voice prompts, get quick access to the mix between chat and game audio and the level of mic sidetone. The software offers reasonably useful and basic functions and is compatible with mobile devices, macOS and Windows.
Connectivity
The connectivity of Audeze Maxwell also add to its value. You can use Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C receiver, a 3.5mm cable or wired over USB-C. You can use it with a variety of devices and consoles, depending on what connectivity option you use. You will have absolutely no issues in performance, no matter what method you are using.
As far as wireless audio is concerned, a wide range of codecs are supported by the Maxwell. These include LDAC, AAC and SBC. A battery life of more than 80 hours also highlight how this headset is one of the best in its category.
Performance
The Audeze Maxwell has audio capabilities that are second to none in the gaming headset market. As compared to standard dynamic drivers, it opts for planar magnetics. This means you can enjoy clear and detailed audio with superb imaging and soundstage across the frequency range. The bass is strong and you get accurate highs and mids.
The Verdict
The Audeze Maxwell may have a high price tag, but it also offers the best audio you can get from a gaming headset.
