The Cherry KW X ULP is different because it is a slim device that has snappy switches and a long body. Its combination of retro, traditional and modern ideas is rather unique. When you are in the market for a keyboard, you will find thicker ones that come with satisfying switches and chunky keycaps. In fact, there are also slim ones that have mechanical switches and chiclet-style caps.
Design
The Cherry KW X ULP boasts black, slim keycaps over a brushed metal and dark backplate. There are RGB LEDs under the slim keycaps that give a faint glow. As far as the chassis is concerned, the edges have a rounded, thin silver finish, which gives it a professional look. Each key has ample spacing, so there is no need to worry about rollovers and missteps.
There are also wide gaps that separate every zone on the keyboard, such as number pad, arrow key column and the function raw. There are two flip-out legs beneath the keyboard, which is expected. The unexpected one is the third stabilizing leg that makes the keyboard sturdier. You can adjust the angles without worrying about the device slipping.
You will also find a USB-C port for charging and wired use. On the right, you will find an on/off slider, while the left side has a wireless receiver.
Performance
While Cherry claims the keyboard can be used for gaming, it does not have any such features that make it a fit for gaming, except for the snappy switches and the ultra low-latency connection. As an office keyboard, the KW X ULP is downright great. The switches are snappy and have short travel, which allows for precise typing.
On the top right corner, you will find the F-key modifier, while the top left is where you will see the mode switch buttons. Cherry has not disclosed the battery details of the keyboard, but the 500mAh battery is good for extended general use. You can also save power when you dim the backlight. You can charge the keyboard quickly with the USB-C port.
Software and Lighting
You can adjust the connection settings of the Cherry KW X ULP through the Cherry Keys software. You can also reassign commands on the F-keys. They can be used to open specific web pages as per your convenience, or you can use them for recorded macros.
However, it should be noted that you cannot change the LED colors or patterns on the keyboard for personalizing it more. Most of the keys only give off a warm, white glow. Red is only used for the Windows keys, Caps Lock key and other engaged modifiers.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a multi-functioning and slim keyboard that has mechanical switches, the Cherry KW X ULP is a good option. If accuracy is your priority over speed, the keyboard is a suitable choice for a variety of devices. It also comes with a reasonable price tag, considering the features you get.
