The Sony WH-CH720N is one of the company’s latest additions, which have been launched for its affordable category. Sony has launched a number of headphones of late in different price ranges and for a variety of tastes.
Design
Sustainability is the forefront of Sony’s focus in terms of design due to which the WH-CH720N are made from recycled plastic. But, this has not had a negative impact on their build quality. They are quite lightweight, as they weigh about 192g. Despite being made from plastic, they do not feel cheap and do not groan or creak. You can swivel the headphones, but they do not fold and you are not provided a carry case either.
The headphones are quite comfortable as well, as the clamping force is not too tight. The earcups are also on the large side, which makes them quite comfortable for big ears. There is also solid padding on the underside of the headband and the earcups to prevent pain. The left is where you will find a power button, along with a 3.5mm jack and also a USB-C port. On the right is where you will find the volume/playback buttons and the ambient sound/noise cancelling buttons. As far as colors are concerned, you can choose from black, white and blue.
Features
While the WH-CH720N do not have a long list of features, they are still quite decent. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are both built-in and you can choose which one to use through the Headphones Connect app. You can also connect two devices simultaneously, thanks to Bluetooth Multipoint support. Support for AAC and SBC audio streams is also available.
According to Sony, the headphones offer a battery life of 35 hours when you opt for noise-cancellation and 50 hours without it. The WH-CH720N have made use of hybrid noise-cancelling headphones and the goal is to eliminate low frequency noises. The noise-cancelling performance is also quite impressive. You do not have to rack up the volume for isolating yourself.
The Ambient performance mode also does not give you cause to complain. You can get a lot of awareness, if not high levels of detail and clarity. You can adjust the noise-cancelling via the app. The headphones also support Sony’s 360 Reality Audio format. As far as calls are concerned, the WH-CH720N use Wind Reduction Structure, Precise Voice Pickup and beamforming mics.
Sound Quality
While there are a ton of other budget noise-cancelling options in the market, the WH-CH720N manage to outdo most of their competition. The headphones prove to be engaging, lively and confident, no matter which music genre you are listening to. When it comes to height and width, the soundstage is quite spacious. The highs may not be very crisp, but the tone is very smooth. The clarity, brightness and variation is also very decent. If you want to improve sound, you can make changes to the EQ settings on the app.
The Verdict
If you are on the hunt for best budget over-ear headphones, the WH-CH720N from Sony are a good option. They have a comfortable design and great noise-cancelling, which makes them a solid investment.
