Given the choices in Apple’s range, it’s a little difficult to suggest the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, but that doesn’t change the main conclusion: The new second-generation M2 chip doesn’t let you down.
Although Apple refers to the 13-inch MacBook Pro as its “most portable Pro notebook,” nothing about it is really “Pro.” For power users, it has too few ports, and its performance is inferior to that of the 14-inch MacBook Pro. It doesn’t offer anything to entice customers away from the upcoming, similarly equipped MacBook Air revamp.
The fact that this is the first laptop to have second-generation ARM-based Mac processors is the main story, though. The M2 is an exhilarating successor to the already outstanding M1 and a promising sign of things to come with future Macs bearing the “Pro” brand.
Specifications
The 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro differs significantly from the 2020 model in in one key way: Instead of using Apple’s first-generation M1 system-on-a-chip, the new device uses the M2. We’ll focus on that for the majority of this discussion, but first, let’s clear up a few other important points.
The laptop has two base storage capacities that start at $1,299: 256GB or 512GB for an extra $200. For a significant price increase, you can upgrade to 1TB or 2TB.
Apart from the new M2 chip inside, there isn’t much to say about the design—this is the same 13-inch MacBook Pro that Apple has been selling since 2016. Its dimensions are 0.61 inches by 11.97 inches by 8.36 inches and its weight is 3 pounds (1.4 kg).
It sports a Touch Bar, just like its predecessor, a feature that Apple removed from the rest of its lineup after years of experimentation. The Touch Bar has been used in some innovative ways by app developers that went above and beyond to use it, but most of the time it’s just a slower, less haptic function and media keys row.
If you’re a function key purist, it’s not a criticism of the device in any case. It shares a physical escape key with other later Touch Bar MacBook Pro models, which is helpful for some power users like software developers.
The big trackpad is still the greatest in the market, the post-butterfly chiclet keyboard is still as reliable as ever, and this machine is surprisingly portable for the amount of speed it provides.
Other notable features include a 13.6-inch screen with a maximum brightness of 500 nits, a 720p front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. (We tried it and determined that the brightness range is about right.) Although it holds up well against the Air, the 14-inch MacBook Pro’s screen is superior in virtually every way.
Benefits/Advantages
The 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro’s stated 17 hours of battery life for wireless web browsing is one of the few noteworthy benefits it has over other laptops in Apple’s portfolio. In contrast, the forthcoming MacBook Air will last 15 hours, the 16-inch MacBook Pro 14 hours, and the 14-inch MacBook Pro 11 hours.
