Overview
SteelSeries has revamped its Aerox line, introducing two new names to its lightweight gaming mouse lineup. The wireless SteelSeries Aerox 9, a MOBA / MMO-focused cursor with a classic honeycomb design and a slew of extra buttons on the left side, is at the top of the price range. At $149.99 (just $10 more than its sibling, the SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless), this gadget must work hard to justify its premium price tag.
The Aerox 9 is largely successful because it is one of the few gaming mice on the market that prioritizes weight while also providing a 12-panel sequence of programmable buttons. Let’s get to know more about its design and features.
Design
The only thing that distinguishes the SteelSeries Aerox 9 from the slightly less expensive Aerox 5 Wireless is that slab of extra macro buttons on the side. That means you’ll still get the solid build premium materials found throughout the lineup.
However, the shape has not changed. Those who have relatively small hands, so the longer form factor does not work as well for them as it might for someone with a little more room around their palm. The long slope towards the back, in particular, nestles in a little too tight, leaving aim feeling sluggish – like dragging everything from the pad of the palm, instead of the tips of my fingers.
But it’s the buttons that truly distinguish the SteelSeries Aerox 9. While it’s great to see a 12-button array on a mouse designed for portability, their placement makes some of them unusable.
Features
While the SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless was a little too big at 74g to be considered a “ultra-lightweight” gaming mouse, the Aerox 9 comes with a get-out-of-jail-free card. Yes, it’s 89g heavier, but this is a MOBA / MMO mouse. There are currently only a few pointers with this tier of macro personalization available. The wireless Razer Naga Pro is 117g, while the wired Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite is 122g. Given the level of macro control available, 89g is beginning to look seriously impressive – it’s currently the only option for those looking for a lightweight MMO wireless gaming mouse.
You can choose to run a light display through the bottom of the SteelSeries Aerox 9, but It was found that the majority of the LEDs were oddly placed on the device’s underside. Furthermore, the small panel at the back of the mouse was protected by hand while in use.
Aside from the design flaws, the SteelSeries Aerox 9 has proven to be smooth and reliable in battle. The skates on the underside of the pointer worked hard to keep everything afloat, allowing us to easily move the camera to take some especially last-minute panic shots in Apex Legends. The sensor retained its precision and monitoring even when the DPI was increased, though it was comfortably under 4,000 DPI anyway.
