Overview
Pokemon Legends: Arceus has the potential to become the Pokemon game of all players’ childhood fantasies, and it so nearly is. Pokemon Legends: Arceus has completely transformed the series for a more contemporary audience by changing the Pokemon formula to emphasise improved open-world exploration and the pursuit of the “get ’em all” goal. But it doesn’t mean it’s faultless, since a few things prevent this novel Pokemon game from becoming the best in the series’ history. It can achieve astounding things, especially for a 25-year-old series that’s always been a little formula-rigid.
Tasks in the Game
As a member of the Galaxy Team’s Survey Corp, you are tasked with building the region’s first Pokedex, which essentially consists of three different formats: finding a Pokemon, catching a Pokemon, and finishing a Pokemon’s Pokedex entry by completing research tasks to advance the knowledge ranks until you reach the maximum of 10. This can be done by catching or eliminating a specified amount of Pokemon, seeing a Pokemon use a particular move, or allowing it to develop. The tasks you’re given in Pokemon Legends: Arceus can feel a little repetitive, especially if you truly want to finish your “dex,” so It is disappointed that there aren’t more observational research tasks modelled after Pokemon Snap, where watching a Pokemon’s behavior becomes as important as catching or battling it.
Gotta get them all.
It compels the tale to focus on the Pokemon themselves, genuinely making them the centre of the show in a manner that no other entry really has by stripping away the quest to “defeat the Elite Four” and focusing on the “must collect ’em all” part of the tried-and-true Pokemon formula. The excitement of discovery has always been a strength of the series, but now you’ll find your next catch exploring the overworld rather than hiding in the tall grass. You can move toward something you haven’t yet entered into your Pokedex after spotting it, giving yourself time to choose the best ball or Pokemon to use to attack it beforehand.
What’s More?
Pokemon battles then take place in the area where you are now standing, often to the point that your own Pokemon are totally hidden by the surroundings, especially if they are little creatures. A lifelong Pokemon fan who used to attempt to envision how huge a Ninetales might be in real life will especially enjoy being able to roam about the battle and get a true feeling of scale. This scale, along with more interactive playable areas, contributes to Pokemon Legends: Arceus’s sense of being placed in a dynamic environment. By shattering rocks and shaking trees, your Pokemon can also be utilised to gather resources for crafting, which can be used to create goods that will keep them healthy or attract new Pokémon.
Flaws
These problems are less obvious in handheld mode, but they are nevertheless disappointing—especially after you get the Hisuian Braviary, which enables you to travel through Hisui from the air. Even though it might be the quickest route, it just serves to emphasise how much the game struggles to load the environment in which you are playing. When compared to the expansive environments of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s not even like the Switch technology is groaning under the weight of the game’s graphic potential. From a visual and performance standpoint, there is such a huge difference between the two experiences that you could think Pokemon Legends: Arceus was the one to debut in 2017.
