When Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop 3, there was no doubt that it was an excellent piece of hardware. In fact, it turned out to be so good that Microsoft itself did not make many changes when it launched its successor.
Likewise, it has not made a lot of changes in the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. This means that it may not have the same appeal if you are in the market to upgrade, but if you have an older Microsoft laptop, or are using a different brand, this would be a great choice.
Design and Build
It is a fact that the Surface Laptop 5 is a very slick machine, but the design is the same as it was in the previous two generations, so some might get bored of it.
Microsoft has chosen to stick with the same design, which means the exterior is still metallic and boasts a reflective logo. The interior is quite sparse with a trackpad and spacious keyboard.
The bezels are a bit thick, which makes the laptop a bit bigger than it needs to be and it also means that it is slightly heavier than you would want.
Screen
Microsoft laptops do not have OLED as yet, so the Surface 5 still has an LCD screen and it also has a 60Hz refresh rate. The resolution depends on the size, as the larger one has 2496 x 1664, while the smaller one has 2256 x 1504 and the pixel density in both is 201ppi.
The 3:2 aspect ratio gives you a boxier and taller display, which ensures productivity. The screen quality is also very impressive, as the colors are vibrant and offer lots of detail. There is touchscreen, or you can also use the Surface Pen stylus, which is available separately.
Keyboard, Trackpad and Webcam
The Surface Laptop features a large keyboard, which is very impressive because it has three backlighting settings and comfortable key spacing. This allows you to type comfortably. The glass trackpad is also very spacious and smoother than plastic because it has less friction.
The webcam is one area where the Surface Laptop 5 does require improvement because the 720p resolution is just not doing it anymore due to the grainy quality. But, the webcam does work with the facial recognition named Windows Hello that you can use to sign into the PC.
Performance and Specifications
Microsoft has opted to use the 12th-gen intelchips in the Surface Laptop 5 and the processor has a 16GB of RAM. Even though it is not the most powerful machine you will find, it gives a good enough performance for the most part.
It may not work for gamers, but it is great for those who want to use it for basic video editing, Photoshop or spreadsheets.
Battery Life
Last, but not the least, the battery life of the Surface Laptop is good, as Intel silicon is delivering better power efficiency. But, it is not exceptional because it might not last a full day. The good news is that it can be charged with the Surface Connect charger, or opt for a powerful USB-C charger.
Conclusion
Microsoft has not made many upgrades in this one and some features have become dated, but the Surface Laptop 5 can still be an appealing option this year with the upgrades underneath.
