AMD has finally made its entry into the new GPU generation and it has opted to do so with two graphics cards, one of which is the RX 7900 XT, which is priced at $899. In terms of pure performance, it might lose out to the more expensive cards that Nvidia is offering, but it does offer a respectable value, which makes it a good option for your gaming rig. The second graphics card is RX 7900 XTX and you have to pay an extra $100 for the additional X, but it does offer some significant differences in performance.
Design and Features
The RX 7900 XT boasts a gunmetal grey frame that has some hints of silver and red. It is significantly thinner and shorter than the massive Nvidia’s40-series cards and feels like a return to the 2010s. The card comprises of 84 RDNA 3 compute units that come with 20GB of GDDR6 memory and a game clock of 2.0/2.4 GHz.
As for cooling, it has a triple-fan solution that boasts shorter fins. Nvidia’s cooling solution has proven to be quite noisy, but AMD’s options function a lot more quietly, which is an advantage. But, this could also be due to board power, as the TDP is about 300 to 315W. Nonetheless, the temperatures were also a bit higher on the RX 7900 XT, as they were between 59 and 60C.
When compared with Nvidia’sGeForce RTX 4080, which is significantly more expensive, AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT does quite well, but it does give more of a challenge in some places like at 4K and 1440p.
Performance
The RX 7900 XT does fairly well in terms of performance, considering its price tag, but it does leave a lot to be desired when compared with Nvidia’slaunches, especially where 4K gaming is concerned. But, this is not surprising, given that AMD is known for offering less expensive options than Nvidia, even if the performance is not on the same scale.
The same appears to be true in the case of the RX 7900 XT, but it is understood that top-end cards will obviously charge more for delivering a faster performance. The RX 7900 XT was able to match the RTX 3090 Ti that Nvidia had launched earlier this year for a price tag of a whopping $2,000. While it has come down to $1,100 since then, there is no doubt that RX 7900 XT would be a better option with a pric tag of $899.
However, it should be noted that the raw performance of the RX 7900 XT is not close to Nvidia’sRTX 4090 and 4080 that it has launched this year, but there is also a massive difference in price tags.
The Verdict
As long as you are not worried about ray tracing, AMD’s RX 7900 XT are quite respectable options in terms of a GPU. As a matter of fact, it is the cheapest graphics card that you will find in this generation, but mainstream gamers may still consider it a bit pricey.
