Even though the credit goes to Amazon for popularizing the concept of an eReaderin 2007 when it introduced the first Kindle, the company has been slow when it comes to making changes and innovations. Most of the latest Kindles are similar to older models, only lighter and smaller and designed for reading books bought from Amazon.
But, Amazon has finally moved up with the Kindle Scribe, which is the first one that supports notetaking. It fulfills the function of an eReader and can also be used for taking notes and is an overall good product, if not great.
Design
Generally, Amazon has opted to reduce the size of its Kindle with every new iteration, it appears to have gone in the opposite direction where the Scribe is concerned.
In fact, it is actually a large design that boasts a relatively light and thin body with a big screen. The device is made from 100% recycled aluminum, weighs 433 grams and is 5.8 mm thick. You will not have any trouble in holding it comfortably because it fits easily into your hands.
The Kindle Scribe is asymmetrical and the bezel is thicker on the right or left, depending on the way you are holding it. The software is able to determine this and adjusts the orientation accordingly. There is a new pen to be used with the big screen and it is included in all models.
There is a basic pen and a premium pen, with the latter coming with an eraser on the top and shortcut button on the side. The pen is grippyand matt and the best thing about it is that there is no need to charge it. Plus, it will clip magnetically to the bezel edge when you are not using it.
Display
There is a big 10.2 inch screen and the e-ink display has 300 pixels per inch, which makes it quite good. Since it does not have any page turning buttons, you have to tap the screen for turning pages, scrolling through menus and for tapping into notebooks or books. There is no need to worry about fingerprints because of the matt finish and the screen is very responsive. You will also find that there are 35 LED front lights in the Kindle Scribe, so writing and reading in the dark is easy.
Reading and Writing Experience
You will find reading a joy on Kindle Scribe, as it has the same simplicity and beauty of an eReader, even if it is a larger version. The font size can be adjusted as per your preference and this is another advantage.
The Scribe is the first Kindle to support writing with a pen, which boasts great latency. You can write notes in the books you read, or you can also create notebooks separately for making notes. The system is a bit clunky, but that is to be expected in the first go.
The Verdict
The Kindle Scribe delivers excellent performance, as it responds immediately and you can set it up via the smartphone app. Its battery life is also spectacular given the size, as it can last for several weeks easily.
