Google has announced the launch of an end-to-end encryption feature – a new security update for Gmail, though not everyone will be able to benefit from it yet. The tech giant rolled out a new encryption feature, announcing its Gmail emailing service will receive end-to-end encryption support after this upgrade. However, the service will not be available for all users in the early stage.
According to a Google Workspace blog, the company plans to roll out CSR to its email service as it did for Google Sheets, Slides, Meet, Drive, and Docs. Google has also started the testing process for Calendar functionality in beta.
The new security update in Gmail comes after Apple rolled out a similar feature – Advanced Data Protection of iCloud users based in the USA by the end of 2023. Apple will make the new feature available worldwide in the coming year, but it is not available for Calendar, Contacts, and Mail.
Gmail End-to-End Encryption
The client-side encryption help post in Google reveals that its servers cannot access users’ encryption keys or decrypt their data. Gmail with CSE would make sensitive data, such as email attachments, unreadable to the Google server. Users can use CSE to note down their encryption keys and a third-party security key to make a backup.
Google servers cannot read sensitive data from the email body or attachments since Gmail client-side encryption will prevent it from doing so. Customers can retain control over encryption keys and identity services to use those keys.
Education Standard or Plus account holders with Google Workspace Enterprise Plus can access the Google Workspace beta program until January next year. However, Enterprise Essentials, Education Fundamentals, Nonprofits, and Workspace Essentials cannot access the service offered by Google.
Business Starter/Plus/Standard, Legacy G Suite Basic & Business account holders are also a part of those non-eligible accounts. These extra security measures may take time to roll out for other account types.
