4K gaming monitors offer a high resolution, which works wonders for fidelity, but it does not deliver the same results as an HDR implementation when it comes to the visual experience. The problem is that most of the gaming monitors have paltry HDR with low peak brightness and limited contrasts, along with bad dimming zone implementations, which means the visuals fail to pop. With a price tag of just $1,000, it is a 4K/160Hz gaming monitor that offers great MiniLEDdimming. The best part is that its specs are not subpar, even though the price is on the low side.
Design and Features
This particular gaming monitor is very subtle, as the panel section boasts a few stylish cutouts and a couple of accent lights. It has a vertical and simple stand with a hexagonal base that is extremely stable and gives you room to make plenty of adjustments. As far as the monitor is concerned, it is fully featured, but also has a variety of ports that can keep people happy.
There are two HDMI 2.1 ports for handling 4K/120Hz, which makes them great for consoles. There is a USB-C port, a DisplayPort 1.4 and a two-port USB hub, which is pretty much everything you might need. The back also has a single joystick for handling all the controls, like settings and Power. It should be noted that the monitor also comes with an external power brick. There are also speakers in the monitor, but they do not have a great sound.
Testing
You will quickly learn that when it comes to color, the Cooler Master Tempest GP27U is the king because of its out-of-the-box settings. It offers great color accuracy and once you fix the brightness and local dimming settings, you will be able to enjoy great visuals. But, the brightness is slightly affected by the HDR, so you need to keep that in mind when you are making adjustments.
When you enable local dimming, you will find that it is quite effective because it improves contrast right away. You will also learn that the Cooler Master Tempest GP27U has great motion performance. There is no blurriness, or pixel overshoot.
Gaming
The Cooler Master Tempest GP27U delivers an excellent gaming performance. Thanks to the local dimming and HDR, it can almost compare to OLED and allows it to deliver gorgeous game visuals. Not only are the colors and brightness appealing, but the quick refresh rate and the pixel response also add to your experience. You will be able to enjoy a high-class experience with this particular gaming monitor.
The Verdict
In most regards, you will find that the Cooler Master Tempest GP27U is an exceptional gaming monitor. It is stunningly bright and colorful and its contrast can give OLEDs some competition. Even though the price may seem high, you should note that it offers an excellent resolution and refresh rate, which makes it worth it.
