In September 2022, Instagram permanently blocked the Pornhub account after numerous on-and-off temporary suspensions in previous years. It emerged as a surprise when social media users found it reinstated over the weakened, though Instagram managed to ban it permanently ban again on Tuesday.
Meta’s content guidelines for Facebook and Instagram prohibit sexual and nudity solicitation on social media platforms. According to an Instagram representative, it was nothing more than an error. The company has previously confirmed that it permanently deactivated this Instagram account for repeatedly breaching its policies.
On the other hand, Pornhub’s representative believes that the company’s Instagram account for the adult streaming platform did not breach any guidelines. Instagram has not stated why it banned Pornhub’s account or which policies it breached.
A Worrying Factor
Analysts consider the accidental reinstation of a permanently blocked Instagram account. They say it is a worrying aspect from a moderation perspective to see a permanently deactivated account can accidentally get back on streaming on social media.
While Pornhub reportedly received a notice from Instagram, wherein the social media company stated it banned the adult streaming account by mistake, the message seemed like a mistaken notification. Pornhub’s Instagram account signifies a significant issue influencing creators like pole dancers, sex workers, and educators.
Although their posts do not breach Meta’s content guidelines, many think their accounts are prone to suspension. Adult actors may not share the content on Instagram despite having a large fan following who can help them communicate with their viewers.
SESTA/FOSTA – the U.S. legislation came into existence in 2018. It made it harder for online sex workers to legally and safely control sex trafficking. The law has an exception to section 230 aimed to hold online sites responsible for facilitating social networks and prostitution & trafficking alongside credit card processors alike.
Pornhub Shared an Open Letter
Pornhub shared an open letter with Meta executive through their Twitter account following their permanent suspension announced in September last year. According to the letter, Instagram disabled the platform’s safe-for-work account for three weeks.
But Kim Kardashian – a sex worker on Pornhub, posted her fully-exposed private parts to her more than 329 million followers without any restrictive action from Meta during the temporary ban. The adult streaming company was happy to see Kim and the artistic team behind the post were free to post their artistry on the social media platform, though it questioned why Pornhub does not get the same treatment.
The Pornhub representative keeps speaking out against Instagram, which calls its randomly and selectively-enforced standards. Meta demonstrated that its policies do not have a reason or rhyme by deactivating an adult streaming account on the social media platform within hours of reinstating it.
Pornhub believes it did not violate any guidelines. Meta seems to have randomly and illogically enforced its policies, which places unwarranted adversities on the lives of those in the porn industry. The marginalized group called on Facebook and Instagram’s parent company to once again reverse their decisions.
