Long-time fans would know that the real-time strategy series, Company of Heroes, is more about competitive play, as opposed to single player campaigns. This is also the scenario in Company of Heroes 3 because multiplayer gaming allows you to enjoy the most important elements. You get to explore the faction mechanics, balance and moment-to-moment gameplay instead of getting bogged down by a strategic map or the storytelling, as happens in single-player modes.
The flavor
In the entire Company of Heroes series that has been released until now, this one proves to be the most stable, balanced and diverse multiplayer game. Physical reality and the movement, such as how long it takes to move, set up and then aim a gun before it turns lethal is the flavoring in the game series of Company of Heroes.
You will find that Company of Heroes 3 has this flavor in abundance. Similar to other RTS games, the units have counter-plays, but your tactical maneuvers and deployment can make a big difference in their effectiveness.
The biggest highlight is the interplay of vehicle combat and infantry, which is quite distinctive. Even when the number of units are limited, the battlefields are alive with movement because of the infantry units. It is better than ever to see the infantry because the animations are quite detailed, as the men vault over walls and fences.
As far as vehicles are concerned, they are available at their own flavors and speeds and they have to deal with quite a few realities. If you want to defeat or use a unit, you need to have a good understanding of how it turns, moves and accelerates. The quality of animation certainly comes in handy in this scenario.
The sound issues
However, the sound design in Company of Heroes 3 is below the series’ standard. It is the biggest disappointment you will come across because the sound seems to be muddled. If taken in isolation, the individual sound effects appear to be excellent, but this can often fade into the background when there are multiple sounds.
When sounds begin to play over each other, as they are like to do in battle, things seem a bit weird. This means that sometimes important sounds that are aimed at alerting you might not play, or are lost in the background, which could result in losses for you.
The improvements
However, long-time players will be pleased to see that there is improvement in the general pace of fighting. This includes the balance between damage of units and their killing time. Such fundamental changes in the balance are also helpful in drawing out a match.
Apart from that, there are also interesting tools given in Company of Heroes 3 that can be used in fights. Another bonus is the elevation over enemies, which means that height becomes important. While the meanings of yellow, red and green cover have always been different, now a degree of elevation weakens the enemies’ cover.
The Verdict
The Company of Heroes 3 offers spectacular battles, thanks to the combination of armor and infantry and remains consistently interesting throughout the campaign.
