The previous models in the Galaxy A series have turned out to be some of the best-selling devices globally, which means newer generations have a high standard to meet. The A53 introduced last year had been quite the disappointment, but it appears that Samsung is once more on the right path with the A54.
Design and build
The Galaxy A54 is quite easily one of the best-looking phones in the mid-range market, as it is incredibly stylish. Even though it does look a lot like its predecessor, some tweaks make it similar to the S23 range like the more rounded corners. This helps differentiate the device from the rest and keeps it fresh. In fact, the phone could pass off as the Galaxy S23+ from a distance.
The frame and the rear cover are plastic, but it does not feel like it and the display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.It is a tad slippery, but the build quality is exceptional. The device weighs a bit more than its predecessor at 202g. It is also available in a number of colors.
Screen and speakers
The screen size has been reduced slightly to bring it down to 6.4 inch, but it still has an AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution. The display offers excellent colors and contrast and it is one of the smoothest device due to the refresh rate. There is an Adaptive mode that caps the refresh rate at 60Hz for providing a longer battery life.
There is also a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display, which works quite well, as does the facial recognition. There is no headphone jack, but the A54 comes with stereo speakers that offer decent clarity and velocity.
Specs and bass
There has been a single digit change in the model of the processor used, but it has made a great difference in terms of performance. The A54 uses the Exynos 1380 and it makes the phone reliable and smooth, as it has twice the number of high-power performance cores as opposed to the previous one. The phone is able to keep up with general day to day activities, which is what you can expect from a mid-range device.
It comes with a maximum of 256GB storage and 8GB of RAM, depending on the location. As the name indicates, the device supports 5G connectivity and has Wi-Fi 6, NFC and Bluetooth 5.3 support. The A54 is also dual-SIM and it also comes with a microSD card slot.
Camera
The trio of cameras on the back are pretty typical, as they include a 50Mp lens, macro cameras and a lower resolution ultrawide camera. The main camera delivers quite beautiful pictures, thanks to its optical image stabilization (OIS). You get vibrant and detailed results and it also has good low-light performance. The ultrawide is also decent, but it is the macro cameras that are the best of the lot. There is also a front camera of 32Mp, which is also an impressive one that comes with various modes.
The Verdict
While charging remains a bit of a sore point, the A54 comes at a price tag of just $449, which makes it an excellent mid-range phone.
