A high-end laptop, the Acer Swift Edge has been designed to strike a balance between display size and portability. It has a 16in screen, but weighs less than 1.2kg, which is not possible with conventional designs. Nonetheless, Acer has managed to produce a powerful laptop that hits just the right spot for people who travel for work.
Design and build
Considering that the Swift Edge has been given a 16-inch screen, the Swift Edge is extremely lightweight at just 1.17kg. Magnesium alloy has been used for making the body panels and they are quite thin, considering how the laptop feels. You will find that every part of the Swift Edge flexes a bit. There are certainly compromises involved because of such a low weight.
As long as you travel, they are worth it, but if you use the Acer Swift Edge in office 90% of the time, then not really. The typing has a certain hollowness that will get to you and it is also a plain-looking device. It comes with a raised plastic screen bezel and plastic has also been used for the front layer of the screen because glass would add too much weight. Portability is the goal here and at 13mm thick, the Acer Swift Edge has done the job.
Keyboard and touchpad
As mentioned earlier, you will feel a hollowness when you are typing on the keyboard. Since the keys are shallow, typing is light and fast. There is also a two-level backlight. As for the touchpad, it is plastic and it has a bit of squeakiness that you will not see in textured glass. There is also a variation in click depth, depending on where you are pressing on the pad.
The touchpad feels like something that belongs on a cheaper laptop, considering that the Acer Swift Edge comes at a price of $1,000. The power button comes with a fingerprint sensor built in and this is certainly a plus because you can log in without entering a password or PIN.
Screen
A high-end display has been added to the Acer Swift Edge, which is not apparent immediately due to the plastic finish. The use of an OLED panel means the contrast is excellent as is color depth. It also comes with great sharpness and brightness. But, there are also some limitations, such as no touchscreen and it can only tilt back 130 degrees. It also has a 60Hz refresh rate, which is quite limited.
Performance
The specs include an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor, 1 TB SSD and 16GB RAM, which are great for serious work. The graphics hardware is also better because it offers more power. But, like other super-thin laptops, this one also has a cooling fan, but the actual noise level is not too high and it only happens when it is under pressure, not when it is used for light work.
Battery Life
This is an area where the Acer Swift Edge stumbles because the battery does not last for a full day of work. Even when you are doing everyday work, the battery drains quite fast and this could be an issue.
The Verdict
The Acer Swift Edge has good screen real estate and excellent performance considering its weight, but compromises have been made to reach the low weight.
