Behavior Interactive has come up with a rather unique first-person action game in the form of Meet Your Maker and this is certainly a fresh idea. You pit yourself against the cruelty and creativity of your fellow players in raids, which makes it a hilarious and tense game. You can spend hours playing it, as you are free to build your own playgrounds of destruction designed to kill players. The game does have its bugs, the tools are limited and the story is not very interesting, but the game is certainly a unique one. Therefore, even though it is a bit rough around the edges, the difficulty is refreshing and makes you want to continue playing.
The story
Taking place in a post-apocalyptic world similar to Mad Max, Meet your Maker has a generic story. An unnamed disease has wreaked havoc and humanity is left battling over uncorrupted genetic material that can be used for developing a cure. Your character is a cool-looking robot known as Custodian and it has a grapple hook, sword and some great ninja moves.
You have to raid outposts for collecting the genetic material that you have to bring to your Chimera. She tells you to murder everything you come across, all the while claiming that she has the best interests of humanity at heart. It seems like a very convenient excuse for you to go about raiding bases, but the story does not really develop further than this vague outline.
The action
Even if the story might be a tad undercooked, you cannot say the same about the action that Meet your Maker offers. This is because it is downright fantastic and has been divided into two parts. In the first, you will be raiding bases made by players in order to get your hands on the genetic material they have collected. In the second, you will build your own fortress of destruction that others can attack.
You will have fun in both situations. While the dungeon creators led by players is something that Mario Maker offers, but the first-person shooting perspective that Meet your Maker offers helps in setting it apart. There are three difficulty levels and they are quite different in terms of structure and quality. If you are killed, you start from the beginning, which may sound brutal, but can actually be a lot of fun. The scarcity of ammo also means that you cannot play it safe for long and will have to dive in on the action.
The fun
The best part of Meet your Maker is when you create your own levels to break the spirit of your rivals. You have the option of using a variety of traps, building blocks and enemy mobs for creating whatever dungeon you want and then watch as others try to attack it. There are a lot of nasty tricks that you can use and this only adds more fun to it. The options are a tad thin and there is plenty of room for it to grow.
The Verdict
Anyone who loves action games is going to become a fan of Meet your Maker because it has executed a rather terrific concept. It is hard to put down, even after you invest 30 hours in it.
