With the Zenbook 14X OLED, Asus has managed to deliver true innovation. It is not about the powerful internals, or the stunning screen tech; it is the surprising lid design that is the most appealing. Plus, you do not have to burn a hole in your pocket for it either.
Design and build
If you get the Sandstone Beige version of the laptop, you will see a coating that has never been seen on any laptop’s lid. A Plasma Ceramization process has been used, so the metal lid of the Zenbook 14X OLED feels like ceramic, which means it is textured and tactile. Thanks to the coating, it is able to avoid scuffs and does not show fingerprints either. The sleek lines only add to the appearance of the laptop, as no halogens have been used and lower emissions are generated as compared to other techniques.
The build quality is also quite impressive because of the MIL-STD-810H certification. It also comes with reasonable connectivity. There are two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a full-size USB port can also be found. There is also an audio jack and an HDMI 2.1 output. There is Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E, a 1080p webcam and the power button has a fingerprint reader.
To put it simply, Asus does not do any such wrong here with the Zenbook 14X as compared to its competitors, but it is heavier and thicker. It weighs 1.56kg and its dimensions are 16.9mm.
Keyboard and trackpad
Even though it is a bit heavier than its rivals, the Zenbook 14X offers quality and this also includes its keyboard. It gives more travel and the keys are comfortable, soft and quiet. It does not come with a numberpad, but that is expected, given the size. The trackpad is also accurate and smooth, which adds to the appeal.
Screen and speakers
The display of the Zenbook 14X is an OLED panel, which means you get sensational contrast and downright perfect black levels. You can enjoy crisp and sharp imagery with the 2880 x 1800 resolution and the 16:10 aspect ratio also adds to it. It delivers silky smooth movement in every app due to the 120Hz refresh rate and everything looks slicker because of it.
No other rival device will be able to offer the same display and quality in the price tag. The only thing missing is HDR ability, which means the brightness might be a bit lacking in some areas. The speakers are also good for background music, but do get a bit tinny and lack bass.
Specs and performance
The laptop comes with the Intel Core i7-13700H, 1 TB SSD and 16GB dual-channel memory. Some versions of the Zenbook 14X use Intel Iris Xe graphics, while others come with NvidiaGeForce RTX 3050. Thanks to the powerful internals, the Asus device works well for dealing with everyday workloads. The fan noise is also inoffensive and quiet and the exterior does not heat up too much.
The battery is the biggest issue with the laptop because the 70Wh pack does not last for a full day of work.
The Verdict
The price of the Asus Zenbook 14X is $1,199, which makes it an impressive device because it is able to undercut and also outpace its rivals, given its attributes.
