If you are looking for a strategy game, Mojang and Blackbird Interactive have come up with Minecraft Legends, which is essentially a simplified version of an action-RTS. It is the simplicity of the game that is one of its greatest strengths because you will not find any levels and they have kept the story minimalistic. While the numerous adaptations and spin-off of Minecraft have managed to establish its blocky-style, this game implements it quite well.
The story
Minecraft Legends is about Evil Piglinsinvading from the Nether because that is what they do and your job is to build the forces needed for driving them back. You have to accomplish this goal by exploring a continent that has been procedurally generated. Players have to look for allies, resources and discover secrets that they can use for destroying Piglin bases and also for keeping friendly settlements safe from invaders. Once you get rid of all the Piglins, you will be victorious and you can start once more on a completely new map.
The whole world seems to have been pulled off directly from the Minecraft series, as the blocks of ore, NPCs and landscapes all seem identical to their counterparts. Great lighting and a vibrant color palette makes everything look great. While the enemies can be aggressive, you can enjoy some gorgeous sunsets.
The difference
In Command and Conquer or in Starcraft, you had the role of a commander of a complex legion of forces, but Legends is different in this aspect. This is because the game is similar to the Overlord series as it puts you directly on the field, which means you are in control of a warrior who fights with a small number of units. The unit types are quite interesting, as all of them have a specific niche to fill. For instance, Mossy Golems are great at healing, while Plank Golems deal with damage quickly, but do not have a lot of health.
The good thing about the game is that it is very straightforward, so you will be able to jump into the action and not have to memorize a thick manual, or worry about a steep learning curve. You can use mouse controls, or a gamepad and both are equally easy to use. This is because your armies comprise of dozens of units rather than thousands, which makes it easy to manage.
The fun elements
It cannot be a Minecraft game without requiring you to build and gather resources and that has been done in an intuitive and slick manner. Small, fairy-like creatures called allays can assist you in this regard. The Piglin army usually attacks at night and the world map highlights every new assault and you can use the Allays to assemble the gates and walls quickly to keep them back.
Your primary home base is a structure called the Well of Fates. This is the location from where you begin and also respawn when you die. Plus, it is also where most of the upgrading happens.
The Verdict
Minecraft Legends proves to be a simple yet engaging strategy game that has some recognizable elements, which can make it fun for many.
