Discord users should start thinking of their new usernames on the platform. The popular chat app plans to undergo some changes over the upcoming weeks. A Discord blog post reveals the company’s plans in detail, saying the company aims to make the app more like other popular social media networks through this change.
The blog post acknowledges that the changes to the gamic-centric app will include the removal of the four-digit code representing discriminator at the end of a username. It will require all users to choose a new and unique username for their accounts. Some tech analysts believe the app will most probably resemble Twitter following the change, as it will allow you to get a unique back-end username.
The Criteria for New Username
These usernames will include an @ sign at the beginning and a public display name. It means you cannot share your username with anybody else, unlike before when the four-digit code lets you do so. However, your display name on Discord will have no restrictions.
The blog post unveils valid reasons for the change. Over the years, Discord users have found it uneasy to share their username for the app with their friends if they do not remember the four-digit code. Since usernames on the platform are case-sensitive, someone could discover the wrong user by not factoring, even if they remember the code.
The Discord blog post has also disclosed the order in which it will allow users to choose their new usernames. It will be according to the age of the users’ account, usually the oldest first. The username must have alphanumeric without any capitalization. They can use full stops and underscores as well.
Online Criticism for the Step Backward
The online chat service allows individuals to create or join groups according to their interests. Previously, it allowed users to get an identity through a name comprising a hash and four digits.
Discord, which hosts over 150 million monthly active users worldwide, has announced everyone on the platform will need to change their username in the upcoming weeks.
Many people have criticized the change over the web. They have asked the company to explain the reasons for it. Some individuals called the change an enormous step backward, whereas others said it is like a phone network willing to change its customers’ telephone numbers to their full names. Even celebrities like Aura, a renowned illustrator, called it run the risk of impersonation if Discord users fail to secure their usernames.
According to a Discord representative, the company heard from many users that they had difficulty connecting with friends on the chat app. It has made several changes to the username system so that Discord emerges as a more user-friendly and accessible app for new and existing users. The company values user feedback and wants everyone to enjoy an improved Discord experience.
Sensitive Data
Discord debuted in 2015 for people who love to play online games and arrange group activities. The widely used app also allows users to split chats into easily searchable channels for others. Popular games like Valorant and Genshin Impact have more than one million users on their relevant public Discord servers.
On the other hand, the known public server is about artificial intelligence that can make images out of text. It is a Mid-journey server with over fifteen million active monthly members. Furthermore, the mainstream and digital news media channels have often covered Discord, including when the gaming-centric chat service plans to force its users to change their identity on the platform.
