When you first hear about earbuds that are stored and charged inside your smartwatch, they would sound like a gimmick. But, the Huawei Watch Buds are such that you would not want to go back to using standalone buds. It should be noted that both the watch and the earbuds are great pieces of technology in their own right.
Design
The watch is shiny, elegant and sleek that comes with a flexible leather strap and boasts one textured side button. It has a 1.43inch AMOLED screen, which is colorful and bright and just the right size. There is a sensor on the back of the watch for measuring oxygen saturation, heart rate and more. On the comfort front, you will not have any complaints because the smooth metallic surface sits easily on your wrist.
The watch weighs 66g and is 15mm thick, which makes it heftier and bigger than others, but it does not feel cumbersome, especially when you consider that it has a set of earbuds within it. Just below the 6 ‘o’ clock position is a clasp that you can press for opening up the hidden compartment. The open-and-shut mechanism of the Huawei Watch Buds feels quite unique and is well-built. The buds are held inside with strong magnets and they do not fall off, even if you shake your hands wildly.
The buds are tiny, as they measure 2cm long and are just a centimeter across. They do not protrude from your ears and they can be worn comfortably for hours. Plus, they won’t fall out of your ears, even when you are running, or exercising.
Connectivity and activity tracking
First off, the earbuds can only connect to smartphones and not to laptops, gaming consoles, or any other device. Otherwise, they are quite good, as they connect instantly via Bluetooth when you remove them from the case. The left and right buds are also interchangeable and you do not need to touch them directly to use the touch controls. They respond to vibration when you tap your ear.
In terms of health and activity, the watch is good for everything, from tracking sleeping patterns to heart rate. It also has a built-in GPS, but it does not track swimming as the buds compartment is not waterproof.
Watch OS and software
The Harmony OS by Huawei is very easy to use. The menus can be navigated quickly and are intuitive; you can get simple and clean notifications. Pressing the only buttons opens up a galaxy of icons, with each representing an action or app. But, the software is not as sophisticated as Google or Apple’s. There is a shortage of apps and only a limited number can be used in connection with your phone. The Huawei Health app on the phone handles everything and it is solid for tracking activity.
Audio performance
While the buds may be small in size, but their sound quality is great. They are consistently clear, loud and detailed and they are great for day-to-day use. You can also find a variety of settings and they also come with active noise cancellation.
The Verdict
The only downside you will find is in terms of battery life, which is good for the watch, but not for the buds. Otherwise, the Huawei Watch Buds are an excellent creation from Huawei.
