Gamers in search of a top-tier gaming monitor will find that the market is flooded with OLED and Mini-OLED options that are available at very reasonable prices. In fact, there are so many choices that new entries are finding it difficult to stand out. However, the RedMagic 4K gaming monitor has managed to knock out its competition in this regard.
Design
Just like its name, there is nothing catchy or appealing about the design of the RedMagic 4K gaming monitor. On three sides, it boasts three bezels and the front has a slim chin, along with the logo. The back gets some flair, thanks to the RGB LED lighting in a triangular geometric design. The build quality, on the other hand, is quite decent. The chassis is plastic, but comes off as sturdy, but the material does not stand out.
As far as the stand is concerned, you can make adjustments to it for swivel, height, tilt and pivot and it feels quite smooth. But, the mechanism used for attaching the display panel and the stand is quite weak. It feels a bit flimsy.
Connectivity and features
When it comes to video connectivity, you will find that the RedMagic 4K gaming monitor boasts one USB-C port, one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. The two HDMI 2.1 ports are capable of handling a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the DisplayPort can handle 160Hz. As for the USB-C port, it is capable of delivering about 90 watts of USB Power Delivery and it also drives two USB-A ports that can be used for wired devices. You will also find a 3.5mm headphone jack available.
The right side of the monitor has a joystick used for controlling the gaming monitor’s on-screen menu. You can turn the monitor on and off by pressing the joystick. It is easy to understand most of the menu options available, but they are not exactly intuitive. As far as gaming-focused features are concerned, you will find an on-screen crosshair, along with a frame rate counter, timer and a black equalizer feature.
Image quality
RedMagic has ensured that gamers can enjoy outstanding image quality and you can have a vibrant and sharp experience from this 27-inch 4K Mini-LED monitor. Even when you turn off local dimming, the image quality remains colorful and bright. With dimming turned on, you will have a more detailed and sharp image quality.
The SDR quality improves further when HDR is turned on. The colors are lavish and the details are excellent
Motion performance
For a 4K gaming monitor, the RedMagic has a 160Hz refresh rate, which makes it amazing. It offers solid motion clarity, as blurring is minimized and you can see significant detail. The monitor is also good for day-to-day productivity.
The Verdict
Whether you want to play SDR or HDR games, the RedMagic 4K gaming monitor is undoubtedly an impressive Mini-LED monitor. While its design and build quality are nothing impressive, its $869 price tag means that it is capable of delivering value.
