If you think that the Motorola Razr 40, or the Razr+, as it is known in the United States, is just another flip phone, then you are in for a surprise. Its over-sized exterior display is a major change, as it allows you to do a lot without even opening the phone up. Moreover, the fourth attempt of Motorola at making a foldable phone is the first one to truly capture the cool factor and charm of the original flip phone.
Design and build
When you talk about the design of the Razr Ultra 40, you cannot ignore its eye-catching cover display. The display covers the front, from the top to the bottom and even the flash and the cameras. This is different from other flip phones in the market, such as those from Samsung and Oppo. But, if you do not want the expansive screen, the Razr 40 comes with a smaller outer display.
The Ultra also has a different shape as opposed to previous Razrs. It comes with curved edges and a block-like shape and the design is very practical and comfortable. The hinge has also received an upgrade, which means when you close the phone, the two halves do not have any such gap. The only issue is that when you open the phone, it will not be fully flat.
Gorilla Glass Victus has been used for coating the display to prevent scratches, along with the rest of the phone. With an IP52 rating, the phone also has protection from dust and even from splashes of water.
Screen and speakers
The outer-cover display of the Razr Ultra 40 is 3.6inch in size and it is unique, not only because of its size, but also because how it goes around and through the two camera lenses on the back and the flash. With OLED tech and a refresh rate of 120Hz, it is a high quality display. The screen can be used for checking notifications, accessing some custom widgets, changing quick settings and taking selfies with the main camera.
You can also run full apps on it, but some content might be blocked, which means there can be more improvement. The main screen is also impressive, as it is 6.9-inch, which makes it larger than other flip phones. The refresh rate is 165Hz, which is the highest for a foldable phone. The screen also looks great, with punchy colors and good brightness.
For audio, you will not find an audio jack, but there are built-in speakers, or Bluetooth. The sound is acceptable, but on the quieter side.
Specs and performance
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powers the 40 Ultra, which was also used in last year’s Razr. This means the processor is not top tier, but packs enough power doing the basics without slowing down. Nonetheless, it also has enough oomph to function as a work device and for gaming. As for connectivity, it is available with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and 5G and it also offers NFC support.
The Verdict
A very slick device, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has caught up to Samsung and even managed to surpass it, as the foldable package is very tough to beat.
