Anyone who loves action game is going to find Trepang2 hard to resist because the first-person, stealth-action shooter is capable of giving you plenty of action to engage in. The gunning and running is quite exciting and even though the story is not that frightening, the jumpscares every now and then do add some thrill. If you are looking for main objectives, it will be a bit short, but that does not make much of a difference on a whole.
The plot
The campaign that you start in Trepang2 is set at a brisk pace and it is going to last somewhere between six to 12 hours. You will play a generic super solider named Subject 106, who is working for a secret Task Force 27. Once you escape a chilly underground prison in Alaska, you have to go after evil heads of Horizon Corporation that is known for trying to create super soldiers.
This is when you will see the execution of clichés that are often seen in action movies and video games, as there is a lot of violence, but this is what action games are all about. Them the cheap and gimmicky monsters of Trepang2 will pop up on screen and the encounters you have with them can add an additional layer of fun. But, they come and go and it can be a little disappointing that they have not been explored much.
The abilities and combat
Once you have played half of the first level, you will be introduced to the Cloak and Focus abilities of Subject 106. In a lot of situations, these abilities grant you superhuman prowess, but you never feel overpowered. You have to be versatile because there are multiple enemies on the screen; the numbers can go as high as 20 or 30.
You have to stay hidden, or they will be able to flank you and also communicate your position with each other. The combat in Trepang2 is open-ended in all of its six main as well as six side missions. The highly customizable eight weapons give you plenty of room for diving straight into the action and kill your enemies.
The combat is not about selecting the right weapon because all of them are suitable in every battle. Rather, the combat is more about using the right approach, as you need a different one for every enemy.
The action
The wild action that you will see in Trepang2 does not just feel nice, but also looks great. The blood and sparks are flying in all directions. Sure, there are some levels that are colorless and drab that remind you of games from the Xbox 360 era, but the action really shines in detailed environments. Sure, there are some glitches, especially where enemies are concerned, but these complaints are minor and the system is able to hold up really well for the most part.
The Verdict
Trepang2 is an excellent tribute shooter that has a smart level design and offers diverse enemy encounters that you will love.
