If you have been searching for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the world of role-playing games, you do not have to look further than the Trails series. As a matter of fact, the Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is actually the equivalent of Avengers Endgame, as three different subseries culminate in this iteration, as does the storytelling of almost two decades.
Even though it does have a huge cast of characters, given that it combines the series, but you will not have any trouble managing because of the pace. In fact, it proves to be one of the best RPGs of the year due to its turn-based gameplay, which proves to be strategically fun and its politically engaging story.
The story
There is a lot of content that has been packed into Reverie, but it still manages to work because the story has been divided into three unique routes, each of which has a different main character. This helps in keeping the revelations and plot twists interesting and fresh and you will not get bored. ReanSchwarzer is the first protagonist and fans of the Trail series will recognize him right away.
His route has a very focused storyline and it still manages to expand on his story from Cold Steel IV. Lloyd Bannings is the second protagonist and his story is the weakest one because it is mostly a repeated one, so it gets a tad boring. The third route introduces a new character called C and this is perhaps the best route. The chemistry is amazing and the backgrounds are unknown, which add some mystery.
The play
Trails to Walk is a timeline system that has been introduced in The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie and this enables you to switch between the three characters whenever you want. However, some of the points will be locked until you have made some progress.
For instance, there is one section where C and Lloyd have to work together for going through two different facilities, as their respective locking mechanisms work together.Such instances make the story feel more connected and intertwined, but still leave enough room for the individual stories to progress.
The issues
The huge cast of characters is one of the issues that you will come across in Reverie. This is because there are almost 50 playable characters that have come from the previous Trail games. You have to remember a lot of names and faces and this can be a tad difficult. But, the good thing about the game is that it gives each character an almost equal amount of time to stay in the spotlight. This helps you interact with the characters and makes it easy to remember.
Nonetheless, the game is not one that newcomers will find approachable. Considering the story, you are expected to know the characters beforehand and if you don’t, then you are unlikely to be able to make sense of what is happening. Therefore, you have to play all the other games in the series in order to try this one.
The Verdict
The franchise is almost 20 years old, but The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie proves to be one of the best RPGs of the lot.
