A competitive, team-based game, Crash Team Rumble should not work on paper because it does not comply with a lot of rules that are usually followed in multiplayer games. For instance, you have to collect 2,000 Wumpa Fruit before the enemy team, which means you have to KO the members. This might seem strange, but it is actually a lot of fun, especially due to the fun map design. The multiplayer proves to be a unique game, but it could use a little work.
The character
The 4-on-4 matches that you will come across in Crash Team Rumble involve the teams of iconic Crash Bandicoot characters against one another. You can currently choose from eight options that are divided into three categories. The first is that of Scorers, which include Catbat, Tawnaand Crash and the second is named Blockers, which comprise of Dr. N. Tropy, Dr. N. Brio and Dingodile. The last category is that of Boosters, which include Dr. Neo Cortex and Coco.
This roster is a good one and even when you switch characters, it will feel different, regardless of which category they belong to. The best at scoring are obviously the scorers and they are able to hold more Wumpa Fruit than others. They can fight off enemies and come with special movement abilities, making it difficult to corner them. Blockers can prevent scorers from scoring. If done well, they will be able to sit on the bank of the other team for a long time.
They can control the space around them and their offensive abilities are also strong. As for Boosters, their purpose is to support the team, which they do quite well in several ways.
The game-changer
One thing to know about Boosters is that they are able to collect Relics quickly than Blockers and Scorers and you can take them to Epic Relic Stations specific to the stage and then cash them in for some power. Only one such station can be found on each of the nine maps and they are costlier than standard upgrades at Relic Station, which only have an impact on your character, but can lead to huge rewards.
TNT drones can be summoned by City Scrape, which can chase your enemies. You get a Big Bonsai tree from Serenity Gardens, which is laden with Wumpa Fruit. The others can summon sandstorms, spaceships and dragons, amongst others. The best thing is that each of them is in accordance with the design and theme of the map, making them unique.
The decisions
When you are playing Crash Team Rumble, you will have to make a number of important decisions during the action. But, the most important decision you have to make is selecting your team composition beforehand. You will not be able to change your mind once the match begins. Every character is different, so you have to consider their abilities before choosing your team. In addition, some characters have to be unlocked and this is a good thing because it allows you to learn their ins and outs slowly, instead of becoming overwhelmed.
The Verdict
Even though it is not a traditional Crash game, Crash Team Rumble is certainly unique and fun, thanks to its incredible maps and interesting characters.
