When it comes to games and their sequels, it is mostly in the second attempt that things really hit their stride because of a bold new idea. Remnant 2 is also in the same category, as they have improved build-crafting and loot, combat is more satisfying and smoother and they have also completely overhauled boss fights. Moreover, the realms are diverse and they are filled to the brim with secrets to uncover and things to do.
The story
The story is just as surreal as its predecessor, as you play the character of a nameless survivor on Earth after an apocalypse. There is a race of evil trees that are trying to take over the multiverse and are known as The Root. It sounds weird, but it is the reason you teleport to various realities for saving the day and doing some amazing looter-shooter stuff.
You also get a chance to speak to returning and new characters at Ward 13 and this allows you to love more about the evil tree race and what they are trying to do. Not the entire writing is bad, as there are some very interesting concepts, but the problem is that it does not have much of an impact on your character.
The good thing is that there are small stories associated with the various worlds that you travel to and these are told expertly, which make them a lot more compelling than the main quest. You could end up in a fantasy world of elves where you have to sold a murder mystery or help a huge robot in trying to recover its cargo aboard a starship. These stories are extremely interesting and they keep you more hooked than the original story, which is really a shame.
The combat
Regardless of which adventure you might be facing, the challenging gun-play makes it a complete blast. In every area, you will be busy dodging, shooting, using your abilities and trying to escape from whatever enemy who might be attacking you. You start out with just a simple toolbox that has a weapon or two for you to use in combat, but gradually it turns into a treasure trove of armor, mods, weapons and customizable character classes.
One of the best things about the combat is that it continues to feel fresh because you are jumping between different parts of the multiverse. Each of these worlds have their own enemies and feel and they are so different that sometimes it is difficult to grasp that they are part of the same game. The enemy type is similar and this could get a bit repetitive.
Boss battles
There are a number of boss battles in every world and while some of them may be uninspiring, most of them test your character’s build and skills in a delightful manner. In addition, they also seem to have some very interesting mechanics. Some of these encounters are truly unforgettable. You also get a chance to work on your build and there are a ton of weapons that can be used for this purpose.
The Verdict
Remnant 2 proves to be a triumphant sequel that offers engaging combat, an interesting multiversal concept and memorable and engrossing boss fights.
