When you are looking for a gaming laptop, you may assume that a portable option is going to be very expensive, but the Asus TUF Gaming A15 turns out to be very reasonable. This year’s model starts at just $1,199 and rises to $1,399, so you do not have to spend a lot of money. The latter price tag gives you aNvidiaGeForce RTX 4060 GPU and a 1080p display with refresh rate of 144Hz. These are the specifications you need for running nearly every game smoothly.
Design and build
The inspiration for the Asus TUF range comes from military hardware and the same applies to this 2023 edition. The notebook is essentially capable of withstanding drops, shocks, water spillages and temperature changes. But, the most impressive part is that the A15 is 2.5mm thick and weighs 2.2kg, which makes it slimmer and lighter as compared to the Acer Nitro 5. Of course it is not the slimmest and lightest one around, but managing it is significantly easier.
Both sides have USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and the left also has the audio, HDMI and Ethernet outputs, along with the USB 3.2 Gen Type 2-C connector and the USB 4 Type-C port. There is no fingerprint reader and it has Wi-Fi 6 instead of 6E. There is also a 720p webcam, which is a bit blurry.
Screen and speakers
Just like last year’s model, the A15 has the same 1080p IPS panel and the refresh rate is 144Hz. You can use the laptop easily on battery power and mains, as you get G-Sync support, along with a MUX switch and NvidiaAdvanced Optimus. It also delivers excellent color accuracy and the contrast ratio is also decent. But, the brightness is a tad disappointing. As far as speakers are concerned, they are mediocre and it is better to use a headset for the sound.
Specs and performance
The processor that powers this gaming laptop is AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS that comes with eight multi-threaded cores and 4.75GHz is the boost speed. With 8GB of memory, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU has a TDP of 140W. The A15 comes with 512GB SSD and 16GB dual-channel memory.
This means the laptop has the right pace for handling any single-player game quite easily and can do so for the next couple of years. Even with everyday photo-editing, browsing, office tasks and multi-tasking, the A15 functions quite well. The Asus never gets too loud or hot.
As a matter of fact, it even has a decent battery life. You can get two hours of gaming easily and it can last for more than nine hours even when you use the display with the brightness turned on full. If you reduce the brightness, it will give you a couple more hours.
The Verdict
The TUF A15 manages to provide better value, an excellent battery life, a decent choice of ports and a screen that works well for gaming and everyday activities.
