While a portable monitor can definitely be handy, budget models do not exactly come with decent image quality. If you are looking for an upgraded experience, the Asus ZenScreenMB16QHG is a good option because it can offer superior contrast, brightness and color performance.
Design and build
As compared to other portable monitors, the kickstand of the Asus ZenScreen MB16QHG distinguishes it from the crowd. The stand sits flat on a table or desk and folds down from the bottom. The design is very stable and gives more room for adjusting tilt. Portrait orientation is also supported this way. The bottom of the kickstand also comes with the tripod stand, which will be useful for video and photo editors.
In terms of form, the monitor is a little less impressive because the chassis is dominated by plastic and it is also very rigid. The lower bezel has a decorative lip that adds some flair, but the glossy nature might be a problem, as it could cause glare.
In terms of connectivity, the monitor has two USB-C ports and one full-sized HDMI 2.0 port. The former power the monitor from the USB-C power brick included, or a connected device. The monitor comes with the 3.5mm audio jack.
The on-screen menu system helps the Asus exceed expectations, as it gives a greater variety of options than you will find on other portable monitors. The right flank comes with a responsive and quick joystick that can be used for menu navigation. There are various adjustments and modes available for image quality, color temperature and color saturation. Asus has opted to ditch speakers and that is not a bad decision, as most portable monitors do not have decent speakers anyway.
Image Quality
Even though this portable monitor from Asus is for those who travel frequently, the ZenScreen MB16QHG offers image quality that actually surpasses their needs. The images are crisp and bright, with great color performance. It is capable of handling videography, photography and digital art workflows and still look attractive when you want to use it for Netflix.
One of the strongest qualities of the monitor is its brightness. It also has decent contrast and it is better than other similar monitors that come with an IPS LCD panel. With a resolution of 2560×1600, the monitor is able to offer sharpness. The HDR performance of the monitor is acceptable, but nothing too special.
Motion performance
A 120Hz refresh rate is definitely a surprise, as it compares to portable monitors that are usually made for gamers. The high refresh rate offers clarity and motion fluidity in games and is also beneficial when you are scrolling throughimages or text. While it does not support Adaptive Sync that may disappoint gamers, many portable gaming monitors lack the same, so it should not be that big of a problem.

Whether you want to use it for content creation, general use, productivity, or gaming, the Asus ZenScreen MB16QHG proves to be a versatile portable monitor.
