An open-world action role-playing game, Atlas Fallen appears to be inspired by Prince of Persia, as it comes with big monsters, big ideas and even bigger weapons to deal with them. There are four unique zones for players to explore and you will definitely have a good time when you spend more than 18 hours on the campaign.
The plot
The story is where Atlas Fallen does disappoint because both the character performance and writing comes off as dry. The plot is about a clash between a tyrannical regime and human rebellion. You take on the role of a rugged desert dweller, who comes with a scholarly touch. You have a few conversations with other desert dwellers and it becomes apparent that your character had been blasted in the face and left to die before the opening scene.
He belongs to the bottom caste called the Unnamed and the medieval world in Atlas Fallen is ruled by Thelos, an evil sun god, and giant sand monsters known as wraiths ravage it. While the setup is cool, the execution is where things fall short. The voice acting is very unenthusiastic and the lip syncing movements are very poor.
The characters
A major problem with Atlas Fallen is its characters, as these are just cardboard cutouts and do not seem to have any personality at all. There is another sun god called Nyaal, who can talk for hours and has a magical gauntlet responsible for your powers and a hope for the rebellion against the other sun god Thelos. There is also a thief who has a heart of gold and then there is an upstanding knight girl, who punches the former, yet has a soft spot.
The interesting elements
As long as you can ignore the dry story and the flat characters, there is a lot of joy to be found in Atlas Fallen, where you can run around with a friend and battle with monsters. The map has been well-crafted and gives you lots of opportunities for building some powerful characters, finding rare treasures, doing a little platforming and fighting big monsters.
The game is an excellent balance of depth and simplicity and is a great one that you can share with your online friend. The online co-op adventure can get very interesting when you check out the open questing system, as you can engage in side quests and the main story events simultaneously and get the same rewards.
As far as the main quest is concerned, it is about unlocking new mechanics and not about the story itself. There are four world maps that are used for telling the story and they all have their own vibe. Most of the quests are to fetch something and come with their own challenges. But, you have to remember that sand is unavoidable because even your weapons are made of it. The combat is all action-packed battles that are very dynamic and the balance between all the smashing and slashing is definitely admirable.
The Verdict
If you are looking for an action-packed RPG, Atlas Fallen is definitely a fun one with large monsters and lots of platforming.
