In 2019, Motorola introduced its first modern foldable phone and they have launched Razr once more this year, this time with a new design and an attractive price. This year’s range comprises of 2 models and they have named it the Razr 40 in most markets to link it to the Motorola Edge 40 series. The second one is the Razr 40 Ultra, but they are named Razr and Razr+ in the United States.
Design and build
When it comes to the design of the Razr 40, Motorola has decided to switch things up, so it is quite different from the previous three foldable phones. It is not like the iconic Razr designs because it has a squared-off shape, which makes it very much like the Galaxy Flip series from Samsung. You will not find a trace of the looks and charms of the Razrin the Razr 40.
But, it does have a vegan leather back cover that makes it unique. It is available in Summer Lilac, Vanilla Cream and Sage Green and offers a good grip, along with being stain resistant. The metal frame is also in the same color, with the exception of the Cream model, so it looks very stylish. When the phone is closed, the Razr 40 is gapless, which is very appealing. The power button on the side also has a fingerprint scanner.
Screen and speakers
When it comes to screens, the outer display is 1.5inch on the Razr 40, which is different from the usual large outer display that Motorola typically offers. The cover screen can be used for doing several tasks and for getting essential information. Opening up the phone gives you a 6.9inch LTPO AMOLED screen that comes with a refresh rate of 144Hz.
The 2640 x 1080 resolution means you can enjoy Full HD+ and color, contrast and crispiness are all solid. The internal screen does not have any downsides and the crease where the display folds is barely noticeable. The absence of a headphone jack is not really surprising and the stereo speakers are also acceptable.
Specs and performance
The cheaper price of the Razr 40 is explained through its core specs because it uses the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 from Qualcomm that comes with 8GB of RAM and storage of 256GB. In comparison, the Ultra version comes with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. In terms of performance, it lags a bit when you first boot it up, but it runs fine after it settles down. Even though it is not lightning-fast, the phone gives a decent performance.
Camera
The internal selfie camera on the Razr 40 is 32Mp and there is a 13Mp macro/ultrawide version on the outside. The main camera of the device has a high resolution of 64Mp, but its aperture is slower than the Ultra at f/1.7. Its performance is mixed, as is that of the ultrawide camera. The most consistent one is the internal selfie camera that gives very good shots.
The Verdict
While the Razr 40 may not have the Razr charm, it is still a successful folding phone available at a low price.
