Corsair K70 Max – Review

When it comes to gaming, there are a ton of mechanical keyboards and this is making it difficult for a company to stand out. Therefore, many have opted to introduce every possible gimmick and feature to see what works. In comparison, Corsair has opted to take a more focused approach and this is evident in the K70 Max.

This is the first keyboard from Corsair that comes with ‘magnetic MGX’ switches, which enables users to assign dual functions to every key. This alone is a feature worth checking out. Apart from that, the keyboard also comes with several other high-end and gamer-friendly features.

The design

The look of the Corsair K70 Max makes it evident that it is a gaming keyboard. It is a full-sized keyboard, so it will take up a lot of space on your desk. Above the number pad is where you will find the extra media controls and there is a volume wheel as well as some other buttons that are even higher. Corsair has also added its LED indicators for mute, num lock and others on the same strip. As for the volume wheel, it is non-clicky and made of metal.

The keyboard also comes with a wrist rest and this is definitely a plus. The rubbery texture and the cushy foam underneath will make it comfortable for you to type or game for hours. There are magnets and some foam pads for keeping it in place. Even underneath the keyboard, the design is quite thoughtful. It has dual-stage feet, along with angled grooves that can be used for rerouting the USB-C cable. There are thick PBT keycaps and the switch stems and key layout is as per standard.

Magnetic switches

You have to install the iCue software from Corsair to use the ‘magnetic MGX’ switches. They come with a 45g spring and feel satisfying and smooth. The good thing about these switches is that you can set the actuation point magnetically. This means that you can decide how hard or light you have to press the key. It is possible to set it fairly light or you can crank it up. You can customize this for every single switch.

Not only can you customize the force needed for operating each switch, you can also set double actions for some keys, or all, as per your preference. One function can be activated with a soft press and a hard press can activate another.

iCue software

The iCue software is needed for setting any of the aforementioned functions. You can find them under the Key Actuations menu. Using the software is quite straightforward and not only can you set the single-key function easily, but also set up a custom reset point. There is a staggering amount of settings and information that the software handles. It also comes with the standard tools for managing lighting effects with different plugins.
