The Asus Vivobook 16 OLED and Vivobook 16X have taken all the spotlight because of their screens, but the Vivobook 16 should not be ignored. It comes with a modest 16-inch IPS LCD and has a more basic setup, but this does not mean that it is not capable of doing the job it was designed for. According to the company, it is the best everyday laptop and the specs show that they just might be right.
Design and Build
The design of the Asus Vivobook 16 undoubtedly feels basic, as it has an all-plastic construction that might feel cheap to some. The base has a rough-textured and rounded bottom, which gives it a sturdy and rugged feel, but the grey plastic around the back of the display and the keyboard feels a little inferior.
One advantage of the use of plastic is that the Vivobook 16 is not too heavy. It only weighs 1.88kg. The physical webcam shield is also a distinctive design element that comes with a mechanical slider mechanism in the middle of the top bezel. It is simple yet effective and the orange color indicates that no one can see you.
As far as connectivity is concerned, it includes an HDMI port and three USB Type-A ports, but there is just one USB Type-C port, which is a tad disappointing. The lack of an SD slot is also a downside. The Vivobook 16 also comes with a proprietary port for charging.
Display and Audio
The display of the Vivobook 16 is excellent in terms of size, as it is 16-inch in measurement and has a 16:10 aspect ratio. The IPS-level LCD panel comes with a 60Hz refresh rate and has a 1920 x 1200 resolution.
As far as audio output is concerned, there is a pair of stereo speakers mounted on the bottom that are capable of good sound. You can use them for video calls, YouTube videos and podcasts, but they are not as good when it comes to music and movie audio output.
Specs and Performance
There are several options when it comes to the processor on the Vivobook 16. This includes the Intel Core i7-1255U, i5-1235U, i3-1215U and i3-1115G4. While these might not be the most powerful laptops available in the market, but they have been paired with either 8 or 16GB of DDR4-SDRAM. The SSD models also vary.
In terms of usage and performance, the Vivobook 16is mostly responsive for the light usage it is developed for. This means that web pages and apps work smoothly and you can easily jump between tabs. Likewise, the laptop works smoothly when you are navigating menus, or using word processing applications. As far as GPU is concerned, you will find the Intel Iris Xe, which means it is not meant for 3D gaming.
The Verdict
Considering the price tag of the Vivobook 16, the laptop is undoubtedly offering an expansive 16-inch laptop experience, which makes it worthwhile for doing everyday tasks, but nothing more intensive.
