The price of gaming laptops has been on the rise due to which the MSI Thin GF63 appears to be one of the more affordable options, even though it is not as cheap as its predecessor.
Design and Build
One thing that can be said about MSI is that it knows how to make a gaming laptop and even though the GF63 has been designed to be a budget device, it succeeds in not letting it show. Despite its name, it is not the thinnest laptop you will find in the market, but it is not the chunkiest either. The combination of the black chassis and red keyboard lighting is undoubtedly striking, but the screen bezels are thicker than what you usually see.
Therefore, there is a large black frame surrounding the display. The rest of the casing is made of plastic, but looks good. As far as ports are concerned, it comes with three USB-A, one USB-C, one HDMI port and an Ethernet connection. The laptop weighs 1.86kg, which means it is relatively lightweight, yet is solidly built.
Screen and Speakers
The 15.6-inch display appears to be larger than it is due to its bezel and the 1080p screen comes with IPS technology for a responsive, sharp performance and wide viewing angles. The refresh rate is about 144Hz, but the brightness and colors are not too exceptional. Gamers are certainly not going to like the poor color accuracy of the screen.
As for the speakers, they perform quite well for a cheap laptop. They are downward firing speakers. There is also a 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth 5.2 support if you want to use headphones.
Specs and Performance
Since the GF63 comes for a reasonable price, there is some compromise in specifications. The laptop uses the RTX 4050 from Nvidia, which provides a decent performance when combined with the 1080p screen. Beginning with its 12th-gen chips, Intel had started mixing ‘efficiency’ and ‘performance’ cores in its processors and four of each have been added to the i5-12450H.
It is quite a fast processor, but the 8GB of RAM does hold it back a bit. Instead of the DDR5, it is the DDR4 and this also affects performance. The storage is also 512GB, so this will fill up fast as well. Soon after you start gaming, the cooling fan also fires up and it emits a lot of heat that you will definitely notice.
Keyboard and Trackpad
There is no separate number pad to be found on the GF63, even though it is common on 15-inch laptops. But, it is the right decision because it means you do not have a cramped keyboard. You get full-sized keys topped with the company’s own font and they are quite responsive. The trackpad is also small in size, but it comes with a responsive click and has a good smooth surface.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a good value gaming laptop on the low-end, the MSI GF63 Slim is certainly a good choice.
