It took quite a while for Google to shift its attention to develop a smartwatch and now it has quickly introduced the second-generation that has been named Pixel Watch 2. The wearable is undoubtedly one of the most attractive smartwatches available and it has gotten some upgrades, but it looks very similar to the original.
Design and Build
The build and design of the Pixel Watch 2 is identical to that of its predecessor. You have to look very closely to see the changes. The Pixel Watch 2 has an aluminum casing that is 100% recycled, which replaces stainless steel used in the previous version. This makes the watch lighter by 5g, as it weighs 31g. It is available in three finishes, which are Matte Black, Polished Silver and Champagne Gold. There are also two band colors available, which are Porcelain and Bay.
They are silicone Active Bands, but some additional straps have also been introduced by Google with Active Sport and Metal Slim. The watch is very comfortable to wear and Google has not changed the placement of the speaker or the side button. The digital crown is a bit closer to the watch, which makes it look neater. The back of the Pixel Watch 2 is a bit different because some sensors have been changed as have the way the charger connects.
Screen and Audio
The display of the Pixel Watch 2 is the same as its predecessor, as it is a circular AMOLED screen covered with 3D Gorilla Glass 5. The screen is beautiful and offers vibrant colors and lots of brightness. The edge still has a thick bezel around it, but the design hides it quite well. Cinema and Bedtime modes still exist and the always-on feature is active by default, which did not exist in the first generation.
This is because battery life has been given a boost, so you do not need to turn the watch off for saving power. The speaker delivers notification, but can also be used for taking phone calls and using Google Assistant.
Software and Features
The Wear OS 4.0 powers the Pixel Watch 2 and it is extremely smooth. You can check notifications by swiping up, check settings by swiping down and access Tiles by swiping sideways. You can get a list of apps by clicking the digital crown. It delivers a slick, intuitive experience and fits the round screen. Body response is a new addition to the tiles and there have also been improvements in Gmail and Calendar integration.
As far as watch faces are concerned, you will find a new selection of designs available and there are endless customization options provided. The watch can be used for Google Maps navigation, controlling your phone’s camera and Google Home control. You can also access the Play Store and download thousands of apps.
The Verdict
Google has added a new chip, but the memory and storage remain the same. If you do not have the original Pixel Watch already, then Pixel Watch 2 is one of the best smartwatches you can get right now.
